HEYYY... Got my first sale at Alamy... Was quite a surprise after 1 month there...

But...

Novel use    Novel Use Scheme 1   $ 0.83

Deceivingly low :p.

How can I get 0.83$ if the minimum file size price sold is 5 pounds ?

Thanks for your insight!

Actually, you got 0.41 of that 0.83 sale  :(

Do a search here or on Alamy Forums for "novel use" and you will get more details.

Probably you will never get any of prices what you see on the site for any size (not only for Novels), because buyers negotiate for price with Alamy...

So, we are in mercy of these both sides..

I think I got my first sale after about 1000 images and at least six months. I'd have to look.

Fortunately for me, I have never had a novel use purchase. (yet?)

Only fair that I mention some of my pictures are RF and I don't know why, the first 1500 were all Editorial. I looked 135 are RF and probably none are suitable for NU or Microstock. I honestly ask myself about once a week, why I don't ask Alamy to just make everything licensed except the one RF image that sold. ;)

The subject matter and license may be that my stuff just doesn't lend itself to any NU purchase, which is fine with me.

So when I comment, it needs to be recognized that I have nothing the same on Micro or Alamy. The subjects and images are very different from what you might have.

As a result my results and averages will be different from someone submitting micro images to Alamy and expecting something other than micro payments for the same?

Here's hoping that I never get an 83 cent sale for a 48MB file that I thought was going up for sale somewhere that pays better than "spare change" I'd be disappointed too.

My last sale had no search (that I could find), no views, no zooms. So much for the way those are counted. ???

Nice work if you get six a month out of under 1000 images.

I agree that is quite a good number. Is that an average month for you?

No!
That is veery good month, usually I have 1 sale in average...
Four of these six are NU, so only 2 are RF...

Last night I dreamed I was looking at the Alamy "Your Images" recent activity screen, with rows of my 3 pseudonyms, with Zooms and Sales boxes blank except for one Sale for the first pseudonym.

When I logged on today, I had a recent sale in the upper left hand box.

Now I realize that law of averages tells us that for every "X number" of times someone has a rather specific and not-too-likely dream, it's going to promptly come true. But I didn't have the sale listed yesterday, and seeing it this morning was eerie - and nice, of course.

(My A port's 100+, so each sale's been notable for me. And they've been for decent prices, perhaps because I'm not in NU, newspaper scheme.)

I uploaded 41 images early last year. In November, I marked them for deletion. They remain for sale for 90 days, then are hidden for 90 days.

Looks like I made one sale in Sept. A Novel Use Scheme (I love how they use that word...I associate scheme with one of its definitions, a secret or devious plan; a plot.) For .83. When I checked the place to opt out, it's disabled for me. Maybe because I have my images marked for deletion? Anyway, I got discouraged early on and quit uploading. I'm surprised I made one sale, with only 41 images.

cclapper - NU opt out is during April (or something like that).

I think I had up to a few dozen images on A for 2 years before sales started, after which I paid more attention to submitting. Can relate to deleting images, though, since I've closed most accounts, for one reason or another.

Cathy, just curious, why did you decide not to continue with Alamy?  I know their upload process is a bit of a PITA, but sales are pretty good.  Comparable to a mid-level micro.

No, it wasn't the uploading process. IIRC, I think I started uploading before I was thinking about going exclusive at IS, and then stopped. Then when I decided not to go ex (whew!) I read how it has taken a lot of folks many months or years to get sales and I think I just got discouraged and stopped uploading. It was just during that time when there was a lot of fence hopping back and forth on my part, in regards to what agencies I wanted to stay with.

While you are correct that on an annual basis, anyone could opt out in April of each year, there's also a small catch. The LIMITED USE program ended in Feb. of 2009

And just so the huge conspiracy to sell everything for nothing to anyone gets exposed, this is what it was:

The terms of the Limited Use scheme are defined below:
Blogs

Use in articles posted by an individual blogger on personal and special interest blogs for an unlimited time. Images cannot be included in a corporate site, used for advertising or promotion or used in a defamatory, sensitive or controversial manner.
Social Networking

For use by an individual on social networking and virtual world websites for an unlimited time. Images cannot be used in advertising, promotion or in a defamatory, sensitive or controversial manner.
Education

For teachers, academics or higher education students on a single user basis for any of the following combinations:

    * Interactive whiteboards
    * Hand outs
    * Project work
    * Reports
    * Dissertations/theses
    * Presentations/lectures

Please note that the images can be used by people working in education as defined above, it will not cover educational publishing which will continue to be sold under our standard model.

Real simple, Blogs, Social Networking and Education. That's it. But since the plan didn't work and it has ended, I guess it doesn't matter?

So what are we seeing? The all new Limited Use, old sales finally getting tabulated or something else?

If novel use has ended, why is this still on my payments and licensing pages?

In an ever changing marketplace we are constantly exploring new avenues for revenue. We can also miss sales opportunities from organisations requesting licence agreements that require us to operate outside our normal model. If you sign up to the Novel Use scheme you are giving Alamy permission to sell your images at any price and by any method we feel is appropriate. Novel Use means we can make these sales and you can share in this additional revenue whilst still having all of your images available for conventional licence sales.
What is Novel Use?

    * An optional scheme, you have to Opt-in to be included.
    * Our sales team will negotiate or set prices which will vary depending on the project and could include high volume and/or low value sales.
    * All your images, except those with a restriction, are included if you sign up.
    * Both RF and RM images are included.
    * Novel Use sales are made through Alamy and not through its distribution network.
    * Your images may be used for pilot schemes, prototypes and trials.
    * Novel Use will not undermine Alamys existing business.

How it works

    * You can Opt-in at any time
    * Once signed up your images remain in the scheme, but you can opt out each April.
    * You receive 50% of Novel Use sales.
    * Your normal termination rights of 45 days are not affected.

Newspaper and volume discounts? Since I haven't had one of these lowball sales, I don't know what they are.

I haven't found the answer yet and I'm getting tired. Maybe someone else has the accurate information?

That one was getting long and I went and searched because I was sure I'd seen something explaining the new sales a bit clearer. I found it.

To clarify regarding the recent novel use sales that have been posted to some contributors accounts. We launched the Novel Use scheme in September 2007 Please see our blog post to announcement at that time. http://www.alamy.com/Blog/contributor/archive/2007/09/19/1931.aspx

In March 2008 we began working with a customer on a large pilot project involving corporate subscriptions for internal business use. The $1 sales that you may have received recently are a result of that pilot. The project has now been extended and we have posted a number of $4 sales as a result of the first phase.

The nature of these projects is such that we have to wait until phases are completed until we can determine how much will be returned for each sale, hence the delay in reporting these sales.

If you opted in to Novel Use initially but then opted out again, perhaps in June 2008 when we opened the opt out window for a short period of time, it could well be that you will still see Novel Use sales posted. These sales originated at a time before you had opted out. From the point that you opted out no further Novel Use sales would have been made.

These Novel Use sales are unrelated to Limited Use which has been discontinued.

These Novel Use sales are also entirely unrelated to our UK Newspaper scheme deals, which does not operate as part of Novel Use.

To check your Novel Use status, simply go to My Alamy and click on the Novel Use link under Additional Revenue Opportunities

We have also seen comments relating to the number of images reducing on the Alamy site plus recent activity regarding restricted images.

These two issues are entirely unrelated.

The number of images has reduced recently and will continue to reduce over the next few days because we could not reach agreement with Getty Images for renewing their distribution contract with us. This means that their collections have been removed from the site.

We recently emailed all contributors who had restrictions on their images, whilst we appreciate that often restrictions are a necessity, however we also find that many contributors forget that they have set restrictions and so we took the opportunity to contact contributors to remind them to check whether their restrictions still apply. We are glad we did as many contributors have now removed outdated restrictions and have therefore increased the sales potential of their images.

As ever if you have any specific questions please email [email protected]

I haven't found the answer yet and I'm getting tired. Maybe someone else has the accurate information?

On your 'My Account' page, scroll down until you get to 'Additional Revenue Opportunities'. Right above 'Find a Photographer', you'll see a link to the UK Newspaper screen. Click on that, and you'll get an explanation, and the choice of opting in or out.
The info says:
Alamy UK newspaper scheme

    * As a contributor you can opt in or out of the UK newspaper scheme.
    * Selections you make will apply to all of your images (both RF and RM [including RM - E]).
    * You are automatically opted in unless you choose to opt out using this page.
    * You can opt in or out at any time.

Alamy are negotiating contracts with a number of UK newspapers, the specific details of each agreement will differ from one company to the next.
Important Points

This may result in average prices lower than previously attained. This may involve Alamy being paid a monthly fee. This revenue will then be divided per image downloaded in that month. (number of downloads are capped for each scheme) RM (including RM - E) images remain as rights managed and can only be used once for the following uses by a newspaper: Print only, web only, web and print combined
Opt In Opt Out

These options refer to the specific schemes mentioned above, these schemes are only in operation with a select group of customers. Opting out will result in those customers not seeing your images. Opting out does not act as a general licence restriction and no restrictions will be set on your images as a result of you opting out.

I like the way they call then schemes. Maybe it's different over there, but I think of it as things like Ponzi schemes and the like.

Yes I found it after I said I was going to sleep, but finding all of those different pages, never did explain it to me as far as payments, times and amounts.

I feel sorry for people who get 83c sales, I haven't and probably won't because I don't have UK content, but it would be nice to have a clear explanation of what's going on.

So far I see:

Limited Use scheme (discontinued)
Novel Use scheme
the Pilot Project scheme
Newspaper scheme.

Did I miss anything?

Alamy is a British conglomorate and you find that the ones who makes any serious money there are mostly landscape photographers, etc, that spend their time shooting around England, Scotland and Wales and with a min of tens of thousands of ahots.

The libraries included in Alamy are also basically landscape, wildlife and nature photographers.
