My first sale on Alamy

Well I finally had an Alamy Sale, having started back in 2008 and with a current portfolio of 870 images:

Country: United Kingdom
Usage: Editorial
Media: Newspaper - national
Print run: up to 2 million
Placement: Inside
Image Size: 1/4 page
Start: 05 August 2010
End: 06 August 2010

Sold for $75 of which Alamy take 40% leaving $45 for me.

I didn't find out which paper it was for but several were carrying articles about the fact that a museum is putting on show of comic cards by prolific artist Donald McGill that the censors once suppressed, e.g.

2 million print run ain't bad... Grin

Follow their forums, you might find your name when people browse for credits every month.

You can also try contacting somebody from the UK there and ask them if they would mind checking in the papers for you.

I did it before and a guy was very nice and spotted the images for me. Had him mail me a copy Wink

Hi there

I get half of the UK national newspaper every day. In the Daily Mail on the 6th August is a collection of saucy postcard pictures, 13 in all, but not the one you sold from alamy. My guess would be the Daily Telegraph or Guardian, which are two I don't buy!

Might help your search a bit.

Where did you find all the info on the sale? All I can find is the sales price and commission stuff....

Sorry for the slow reply, been flat out on event work.

When logged in to Alamy, under Sales Information there is an option Summary of Images Sold and the the info appears in the Details column on there.

hmmmm.... mine only tells me the file size they bought but not the usage other than RF or RM,,, I must be missing something... unless it is the browser I am using but that dont seem right

Congrats. After the first one they seem to gradually increase in frequency, which is a good thing as you still have $200 to go to get to a payout.

I had yesterday my first sale on Alamy....
That was RF license and price is 45,46$, my part is 27,28$, but price for that resolution is 90€...?

Can somebody explain this...?

Where do you take the info that the price is 90 Euro? There is nothing like fixed price. And there are huge discounts if you are big enough...

Or if you are a newspaper, or an educational distributer. Even so, it's disappointing that three fairly recent school textbooks I have in my hand have 0, 0 and 6 images credited to Alamy respectively. (Oddly, one of the books has its cover photo credited to Thinkstock/Alamy, but it was published before Thinkstockphotos was launched, so presumably there was a previous agency of that name?)
BTW, in two of these books, a large number of agencies is credited, while in the third, the author took nearly half of the photos and the others are credited to a variety of agencies.

So I guess the competition is fierce. I'm guessing that they put a 'wants list' around all the agencies. I wonder if Alamy puts all relevant pics forward or just a selection. If the latter, how would they be decided.

I had a recent sale for $36.58. The calculated price was $391.31. I contacted Alamy to clarify if there had been a mistake. Here's their reply:

"I checked the sale amount and found that the invoice here is raised as per the price agreement we have with the client concerned.

We do have agreed usages/rates with some key customers and will negotiate on sales if necessary. Price calculator does not show such variations in price. In order to keep in line with our competitors, who work in the same way, we must sometimes sell images this way. If we did not offer these incentives then images would be less likely to sell.

The key part of these deals is that we simplify the pricing and print runs. With the limitations our calculator places on us, we have no choice to pick the highest print run and the largest page size when we are raising an invoice. Actual use is nearly always at a much smaller size and a significantly lower print run. We always reference the contract where the actual detail lies and this overrides the sometime irrelevant quantities on our invoice."

I guess that I'm placing too much hope on the calculator and not realising the reality of the discounting & pricing that Alamy are negotiating.
