Topic: What should I charge for this private license?

(Read 1636 times)

« on: February 25, 2010, 11:30 »

An education publisher contacted me to seek permission to use a photo which has been deleted from my Alamy Collection by myself.

The same photo was previously licensed by Alamy once.

The photo will be used inside three times, once at 1/8 page, once at
1/16 page and once spot size.

Print Run: 55,000
Distribution Rights: World
Language Rights: English and French
Products: Student Textbook, and All Related Product Family components
including Teachers Resource Book, Ebook, Incontext Promotional
Media: print, CD/DVD, online
Print Run Breakdown: Student Book 30,000; All Other Product Family
Components 19,000

Can anyone give me an idea how much I should charge for the uses? Thank you.

This link might help give you an idea. It's a calculator of what you should charge for stock usage. Some of the prices are a bit high, but you will get an idea of what to charge.

Well you can charge as much as you like, but as the buyer had seen your image on Alamy I'm guessing they're going to be wanting a similar price, which for the usage you've mentioned could be anything between $100-$200, the Alamy price calculator might come up with a different price but mention the word 'education' to the Alamy sales dept. and the discount bell will start ringing and it's surprising just how many textbooks these days come under the education umbrella  Roll Eyes

It will all come down to how much they want the image and your negotiating skills. Don't forget to include a time period the license is valid for.

Thanks for the tips. I have quoted a price which is similar to what the previous license was. However since this usage will be at various places in the book and in different media, I wonder if I should take that into consideration too. Maybe next time since I have already sent my quote.

Another question is, since the user first saw my image from Alamy, will Alamy claim a fee from me as well? However this image is no longer available at Alamy.

If your buyer cannot buy from Alamy now, and your image is not longer posted on the Alamy site, then no, I don't see how Alamy can ask for a fee. Or to rephrase, they might ask, but I don't see how they are entitled.

Alamy are very decent about putting buyers in touch with photographers which is how I'd imagine you were contacted, if that was the case and you were contacted after you had removed the image from their site then no they won't ask you for a fee. I've done quite a few custom jobs as the result of Alamy putting a buyer in touch with me and they've never made any claim.

Whatever price you quote, exclude reprint rights. I have sold an image to an education publisher and have resold it for five reprints so far.

Got it, I will put the terms on my invoice as well. Thanks all.

There is a detailed invoice describing terms and conditions on this thread. Rather you would need that much detail would be up to you.
