« on: October 14, 2011, 16:15 »

well I guess i don't know that it'll be called the 1D Mark V, but Canon is releasing  a new Camera on Tuesday and the supposed specs are...

1D/1Ds line is about to be amalgamated. (Name Unknown)
    Full Frame
    18mp
    12 fps
    61 AF Points
    New Battery
    Available in March
Price unknown, but I suspect more than the 1D Mark IV

[Canon Rumors]

I was going to ad.  If those are the specs then I'll probably just stick with my 5D, unless there is any other really big reason to upgrade.

The translation of the rumor from digicame-info.com doesn't really say clear whether is 12 or 14 fps. Insane, anyway. Sport and action shooters should be happy.

Seems to be a fairly minor feature upgrade. With all of the revolutionary stuff coming out in the CILC category I guess I was expecting more here.

I don't think that it will be 18MP if they are combining the 1DS and 1D

It's just a rumor ppl, there's a new one every week, so I see no reason to believe this is the camera that's getting announced and if it's geeting announced at all (I really have no reason to believe it). And as qwerty pointed out, 18 mpix makes no sense at all if they're combining 1D an 1Ds, it's less then what the current model offers. They can't get enough fps with higher mpix (data stream would be far too large). So this amalgamation makes no sense at the moment.

A reason to believe it is that Canon Rumors assigned it a category of [CR3] ("Treat this rumor as fact"). They're not usually wrong on those. But I guess we'll find out on Tuesday.

Does it come with a some hints as how to earn it back from 0.25$ subscriptions?

Yep, they're usually pretty accurate which makes this not overly thrilling news. Sony seems to be hogging the headlines lately.

And if the next 5D is a slight upgrade I'll probably stick with my 5DMII and get a Sony NEX-7. Canon better start innovating because the game is changing and it's starting to look old school.

I'm interested...a full frame camera that's weather sealed and shooting at 12 fps (or 14fps) with 61 AF points sounds too good to be true - but it would be one heck of an all around camera.  If they release it in the Fall, I may buy one in the Spring after the first round of firmware updates.

I'd sell my 7d and use the 5d as a backup only.  Weather sealing and the fact that Canon is looking at pixel quality as opposed to quantity is the selling point for me.

LOL - In less than an hour at 12 fps you can shoot enough photos to only need 1 sub each to pay for the camera !  Might have trouble with so many similars on DT, though Smiley

I will definitely be looking hard at buying this camera if the rumor is true.  I love the speed of my Mark III (10 fps) so to go a little faster and have a full frame sensor and the ability to sell XXL files is very appealing to me.

The new battery intrigues me because my Mark III batteries never cease to amaze.  I can shoot non-stop for more than 10 hours and still not drain even the first battery.  I have never drained two in a day and I shoot a lot!  I can't imagine what they will come up with to improve it.  Maybe a lighter variation?

It would make more sense if they also came out with a 1Ds camera as well, later or whenever.  I can't see too many portrait people downgrading in megapixels to gain speed.  At studio portrait ISO speeds (100 OR 50) there isn't really much to gain either sensor with 'less noise'.  There isn't really noise at ISO 100 to start with.

The specs mentioned do not appeal to the studio shooter, that's for sure. And I'm quite inclined to believe that a successor to 5d2 will be launched in the following months. I also think that it would have more megapixels and more cross-type focus points.
To be honest, I don't need more MP than 5d2 and for studio work I also don't need more focus points.

Big business for Canon will be 5D mark III, ONLY!

Believe it or not there is a whole other world of photographers out there besides Microstock shooters.

This camera would appeal to a wider range of shooters than the 5D series in my humble opinion.  Sports shooters, concert/event shooters, wedding photographers, nature/wildlife photographers.  Basically anyone that needs to capture moments that come and go in an instant.  The 5D cameras produce unbelievably beautiful images in my opinion but they are slow and they are fragile when compared to the 1D series.

If they'd do that it wouldn't make any sense, since they wouldn't have a flagship camera anymore (it would still be 1Ds for studio/fashion etc togs) and 5D3 would outperform the new 1 series in resolution and would be a much better choice for the togs I mentioned and at least 95% of stock photographers. I can borrow what ever camera I want to since I know most ppl from Canon&Nikon SLO, but I always preferred mpix over fps for action shots. It won't always work but for sports like tennis, running/sprinting (both staged with models) etc, 4-5 fps is really all you need (I always used a D3x or a 1Ds3).

The next 5D desperately needs a better AF system, at least similar to 7D. Sometimes it struggles even in descent lighting conditions and in studio while using the outer (or better said non central) AF points.

^^^ they WILL have a flagship camera, because in a 1-series body you'll have a lot of things not present on the 5d. And it will fit a special class of photographers. But for stock? No, thanks - I don't need the extra focus points, or the weather sealing, or the integrated grip, or 100% frame coverage, or dual cf card slots or etc-etc.
I strictly need the best possible image quality for reasonable money. At this moment, 5d Mk2 fits the bill perfectly.

I can't even imagine a better battery than what's in my Mark III ds. The drawback is I go so long after a recharge that I forget there is a battery in there.
I suppose if it were smaller and lighter...

And what does weather-sealing mean? If it means no more sensor dust I'd buy it in a second. The auto-clean feature of my Mark III, if it works at all, doesn't do a very good job.

I agree with everything you just said.

Weather sealed is a must for me up here in sunny Seattle.  I'm so hard on my gear that I definitely need the stronger body too.  I don't disagree with what anyone says about the quality of the images the 5D I and II.  I just know my shooting style would not allow for a long life of either.  I've all but decided to buy this new camera if it is as described.  One teeny, tiny factor I need to consider however....

The price.

+1 - the 5DII is a studio machine: I always use it on manual, with 1 focus point on the eyes, ISO100 and F11-16. Outdoors and for events, especially for focusing, it's rather mediocre.

What aperture lenses are you guys using? I don't find focussing a problem but it does depend on the aperture of the lens and the brightness of the scene.

It doesn't really matter with outer AF points, since they're not f2.8 sensitive. To answer you question, I'm using Canon 85 1.8 and Sigma 50 1.4.
