I currently use a Canon 40d, but have always intended to upgrade to full frame when I can.
In the UK at the moment, a new 5d mk1 is just a little over half the price of a 5d mk11.
Apart from the video and XXL size available with the mk11, have those of you who have upgraded from the mk1 to mk11 found it to be worth the extra (double) price.
If money was no object, this would be not be an issue, but I know the mk1 has been a workhorse for many stock photographers, and it may well be that a new or used mk1 will be fine for stock for a few more years yet.
Cheers.

Yep, I got both, if you don't need extra pixel go for the mk1, it's definately an amazing camera for our job. Of course, the mk2 offers the auto sensor cleaning that the mk1 hasn't, and it's really helpfull. Instead the dust for the mk1 is an annoying issue.

Robi has it exactly right IMO.  The 5D I is an amazing camera.  Really outstanding.  If not for wanting more MP I would probably not have upgraded.  The image quality of the two is very comparable.

Personally I could care less about things like live view and movie mode.  The sensor cleaner is nice, because as Robi said - the dust is an issue for the 5D I.  But with any of the excellent sensor cleaning systems that is not too big a deal.  The 5D II has lower noise at high ISO, but the 5D I was pretty low noise as well.T

The 5D is a truly awesome camera.  You would not be disappointed with either version.

Thank you both for those comments.
I've only used the live view a couple of times on my 40d, and wouldn't miss that feature, and I've had to clean the 40d sensor with a wet swab despite the auto cleaner, so that isn't major factor for me.
I think with the funds I have available, the mk1 is probably the way to go. I'll have to do some hard thinking. I would love the mk2, but  we can't always have what we would really like in the real world :)
I have a 350d as a backup, so if I did get the 5d, I could sell the 40d and probably get a decent amount for that to offset the cost of a 5d while still having a backup camera.
Once again, thanks for your input.

I would say the same - get the 5d Mk1 and if you have the extra money up to Mk2 better buy some lenses. In the end the image quality matters and the old 5D is nothing short of superb here. I'm having it for a couple of months and I can't say one bad thing about it. Yea, it has 2 spots on the sensor, but I clone them both in 2 seconds and that's all. I'll probably clean the sensor with a swab but this is not an issue, in my opinion.
I come from 350D and 40D.

Just an update
I bought a used 5d mk1 a couple of days ago.
Compared to the 40d I find the shutter sounds clunkier, and the back screen is smaller with a  poor display.
BUT the results are outstanding :)
I didn't expect to see much difference till I zoomed in to 100%, but even the thumbnails seem sharper and more vibrant.
All in all, I'm very glad I bought it, and of course my 17-40 now works as it was intended.
I'm sure the 5d mk2 would be even better with the improvements in screen etc, but for less than half the price I now have a superb camera.
My only real suprise is how much better than the 40d it seems.
The only decision now is do I sell my 40d
Cheers all
Bob.

After using 40D for 1.5 years one minor thing that impresses me in 5D Mk II is large and very crisp display. Very different feeling after 40D.

I keep 40D for backup, and for wide-angle shots (I have EFS 10-22 lens and am not going to invest to a full-frame wide anlge).

Congrats on your choice!
If money are not a problem, you should keep your 40d, for wildlife, sports, action.
It depends on what you like and need.
If it was me, I'd probably sell the 40d and get the MP-E 65 plus macro ring flash ;D
