Topic: Digital compact camera for underwater photography?

I'm thinking of buying a compact camera for underwater photography, instead of buying a housing for my 5d mark II.
I used to shoot with Canon 500d + fantasea housing, but it started leaking - and I flooded my camera Wink
So, I need a new one.... But do I want to invest sooo much money on a housing for my mark II ? And do I want to carry around all that heavy equipment??  Undecided
Can I just buy a compact camera set instead? Is any of the compact cameras good enough for stock?

The best compact waterproof camera I can think of is Canon D10. It one of the successful waterproof camera. There is one more you might consider is Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 which is again a waterproof also can take full hd video and has 3d photo mode.

Thanks for answering Smiley
I tried Canon g12 since it has raw, but I didn't think the pictures got quite as sharp as I wanted them to Smiley
So I started looking into four thirds cameras. But I realized it would get more expensive to by the camera, housing and strobes, than it would be to buy a housing for my 5d  Embarrassed

Hi Kjorgen,

I have a couple of suggestions for you:
Nikon Coolpix P7000 and Fantasea FP7000 housing , click here to see the review for the P7000

Another Option is one I suggested to someone with a 2200$ budget, see below:

First of all , I would suggest getting a couple of strobes. With 2200$ , you will not be able to get a DSLR package and I believe that strobes make more of a difference that one camera or another.

Your budget should be enough for the Olympus Pen Micro 4/3rds cameras , housing and 2 strobes , maybe you will go a little bit over.

Amazing review of their previous model can be found on Backscatter

Here are some links to get you going:
Olympus Camera and Housing Bundle
BTS Olympus Pen Arm and Tray set
2 x YS-01 Sea and Sea Strobes

You will also need a couple of fiber optics cables.

If you want you can go for a Sea and Sea arm and tray set , they have a couple of options as well.

I think the Olympus Pen will give you the best results for your budget.

If you have any specific questions , PM or email me and you are welcome to ask more questions in this thread , I will do my best to recommend and there are many other professionals here which will for sure comment and recommend themselves.

I bought the Canon D10 for the same reason, my 5DmkII is heavy for carrying around everyday and the housing for underwater stuff is too expensive. I've gotten really nice impromptu shots with it and quite a few are now online as RF. It's limiting because of the automatic nature, you get what you get, and there's only so much you can do in post because it shoots jpeg but well worth it. Water proof to 10 metres, shock and dust resistant and weighs so little you might forget you have it in your pocket.
