I don't get why so many are gushing over these. Looks like a cheesy photoshop filter to me.
 Huh

is it just me?

I guess part of the fun is the challenge in shooting.  But yeah, I can see how a lot of the shots would just be easier to do in Photoshop.

So I suppose photographers enjoy them, because they're fun.

Looks like a crap piece of kit but with a very good marketing department.

I don't get it either.

People pore over tests, study the graphs and charts, and pay huge sums of money for the best camera and lens they can afford.

Then they go and stick one of these things in front of it.

Just shows what clever marketers can do.

ever heard of Holga?
well its almost a cult, so lensbaby makes your digital camera into Holga. I have one, the simpliest, and I use it sometimes, I even have some images submitted and approved

Buy yourself a cardboard box, seal it up with gaffer tape, punch a hole in it and it'll do the same job.

Or use an old UV filter, smear petroleum jelly on it - thick or thin, as you want - and leave a space in the middle - big or small, as you want.

Isn't that what the lensbabie manufacturers have everytime somebody pays $100 for one of their products  Tongue

Or use an old UV filter, smear petroleum jelly on it - thick or thin, as you want - and leave a space in the middle - big or small, as you want.

And you'd get the same result but much cheaper.

and then you try to focus with smeared grease filter to the upper right corner, and then in the next frame in the center.

The reason why so many of us enjoy these things is that we're interested in photography...

You remember that?

The thing you do with the camera and light...  _Before_ the image is on your computer! :-)

I don't have a lens baby, but I do have a pinhole front for my dSLR...  which is sorta the same, and just has hard to explain to people who don't enjoy the photography bit of what we do...

Yeah ... I do pinhole photography too.

Here's my contribution to the 2008 World Pinhole Photography Day (last month) ...

I just don't pay $100-plus to do it.

Addicted? no crap!

I´m done with that blurry/mysterious black n white mysterious/blurry out of focus thing. That´s for "Artists".  We´ve all had that time in our life I guess. Stockphoto wiped out the last of it Wink

When I started shooting it was almost forbidden to use color and sharpness...

I've gotten a number of Lensbaby shots on IS (bought it through an IS promotion).

I agree the advantage is quick selective focus, unlike vaseline on a UV filter.

It looks like it's the same effect as radial blur in photoshop, except the lensbabie lets you curve it, and change the location of the focus.
