With the US dollar so low I'm reluctant to transfer my PayPal money to Europe right now, so the amount is building  :)

Does anyone know of an on-line store that sells photographic equipment (camera bodies and lenses in particular) for US dollars, will export to Europe and accepts payment by PayPal?

Might as well take advantage of the low dollar if I can.

I looked into that as well, to buy stuff overseas, but it seems the Dollar is not low enough still. The price is still about the same or higher for a lot of Canon equipment. The problem here in Germany is that I have to add 19% + 3 to 6% tax (depending on the product) on the price in the US as well as on the shipping cost (shipping cost for a lens ~$50). I looked mostly an B &H prices. I do not think you can pay with paypal. Another drawback is the warranty. You just have on year on US stuff and have to ship it to the US. Here in Germany you have two years. So I decided to buy my lens here in Germany. Just orderd the Tokina 12-24 on ebay. Should arrive today or in the next 2 days (hopefully). I will convert the money via moneybookers and sent it to my German account. We never know where the Dollar will go, for me it seems the value is getting lower and lower, so better transfer it now than latter. But maybe we have some people here, who know the markets better and can give recommendations to transfer now or better wait...

Okay, thanks. I looked at B&H, but quite a bit of the stuff I looked at (Nikon camera bodies in particular) they won't ship to Europe. Don't know why.

Are there any outlets in Europe that accept PayPal?

Yes there are: Can you read German? This one is in generally pretty cheap:http://www.digital-versand.de/ Here you can use paypal
I have not ordered there though.. But it is popular although lately there have been some complains, they did not ship in time or whatever, but they are selling a lot. But they have no Nikon stuff it seems. Maybe you should switch to Canon :-) Canon is better anyway ;)

Yeah ... but can you get new stuff on e-bay? I'm looking longingly at the Nikon D3 ...

Yes, you can get new stuff.  There are quite a few stores that sell new items.  One tip is to make sure that the feedback rating is close to 100% and to read some of the most recent feedback.

But, has the D3 been released yet?  That's the Nikon, right?  I think you have to preorder it right now.  (In Canada anyway).   So, I'm not sure e-bay would be much help yet.   I checked on Vistek.ca, one of Canada's biggest sites for you, and they don't ship international so I doubt the other Canadians do either.

No ... and yes ... but I'm still looking longingly at it.

And I can't see any way you'd get one on E-bay other than at wildly inflated prices in the first few months.

Bateleur:  I am looking for a Canon printer, I went partway through the checkout to see how much shipping is - I noticed that cameracanada ships offshore.  I haven't actually purchased from these guys before, so it isn't exactly a referral.  They pay a lot for print advertisements so I'm sure they are legit.  Vancouver, I think.  No paypal though, but quite a bit cheaper I think than you were looking at in Australia.  $5499 CDN plus I think it was $162 shipping  (with a bonus 8 gb extreme III - worth about $180)

http://cameracanada.com/eNet-cart/Product.asp?pid=17009&type=

Seems to me it was quite a bit more than that in Australia wasn't it?  Still... how would you handle warranty issues?

Who says the dollar is 'low'?  It might be lower than recent times, but for all we know its value could still be too 'high'.

"Nothing is too low to go down, and nothing is too high to go up"

In 1954 $1 bought 6,000 JPY (Yen).  Today it buys 140 JPY.  Presumably at various levels (pehaps 3,000, 2,000, 1,000, 500 etc) people thought it was 'too low'.

I have no idea where its going, but if it can fall from JPY 6,000 to JPY 140, surely it can just as easily fall from JPY140 to JPY 50 or lower.

Its a real problem for those of us who live in other countries (which is why the US Government is allowing it to happen).

You don't think this effects Americans too?

Yes it does.  Of course.  As the dollar goes down imported goods from overseas become more expensive.  If the overseas manufacturers cannot keep prices stable with efficiency then prices will go up and America gets inflation (which is what the Fed wants).

American goods become less expensive in overseas markets.  This makes them more competitive.  So long as America actually has goods that people want to buy........

Overseas travel is becoming much more expensive for Americans.  That nice trip to England now costs a lot of money in dollar terms.

But I keep seeing statistics which say that 70% of Americans have never travelled overseas and do not even have a passport.......

Like water, the dollar will eventually settle at its natural level.

1) The Fed does not want inflation. In fact, that has been enemy number one for the Fed since we went off the gold standard.
2) Most of the goods consumed by Americans aren't made in America, so the devaluation of the dollar has a large effect on all Americans, even the ones that don't travel.

I do believe the 70% stat (I'm one of the 30% and I travel every year). After all 1/5 of Americans can't locate the US on a map, so you can't expect us to go overseas when we wouldn't be able to find our way home  ;D

Although the Fed says publicly that it does not want inflation, I believe that the opposite is true.

A little inflation is not only healthy in a successful economy, but past statistics have shown that annual inflation below 2.5% is tantamount to a deflationary environment and leads to slower economic growth.

This is why Central Banks worldwide tend to have inflation targets in the 2% to 2.5% range rather than zero.

The risk for the Fed in encouraging inflation is that it overshoots the ideal levels and causes a spike which will need high interest rates to reverse (which is what is going to happen).

A few years ago I worked for a scientific organisation here in Switzerland. One year we held a big conference down in Sicily ... and it was big, several Nobel Prizewinners attended.

An American doctor working on AIDS for the US Army Medical Corps came, and not only did she insist on bringing all her own food - boxes and boxes and boxes of it - but she also brought all her own bottled water.

We had a bit of a giggle about that. The bottled water was Evian.
