Author Topic: Canon 5D Mark II or 7D? (Read 29039 times)

OK Guys, here is my issue maybe you can help me.

I need to buy a new camera and i can't decide if it should be the 7D Crop or the 5D Mark II.

On the one hand i have a new fisheye for crop, a 17-50 2.8 Tamron and a 28-75 2.8 Tamron to be used on the 7D.

On the other hand i wand a superb camera with great portrait and low light performance.

I am not a professional shooter nor a great microstock photographer. I mostly shoot just for fun and sell some of these images. I am able to invest between 1900-2800 €

What do you think?

The 5D MKII has a lower pixel density. Therefore it should have lower noise, especially at higher ISO settings. The full frame sensor is also ideal for portraiture as it will have a faster depth of field fall off (Bokeh) as compared to a crop sensor camera.

The 7D is an ideal choice for sports, birding or any other application where you need more reach from your given lens.

thinking outside the (canon) box, i'd consider the nikon d700, which combines the best of both canon cameras. it's full frame, even better in lowlight than the canon 5dmark II, and works superbly to capture fast moving events. its drawbacks are its lower mp count (12) and lack of video facility.

another idea is to get the 7d and to sell it later for something better. i've never had any problems selling my gear that is around one years old. ie my nikon d90 went within a day of its listing online so i could purchase the d700.

I kept waiting for Nikon to announce the D700s (video) but am really disappointed. After more than 30 years of devotion to Nikon ... the switch is painful.

you are maybe right but reconsidering that the lenses are only 300€ ones and no L or USM or Canon. Should i not bette upgrade to the Package of 5D Mark II with the 24-105 USM L 4.0 Lense Kit?

I have the 7D (it's my primary camera) and have no issues with it for stock. It has a bit more noise when compared to the MkII, but it's not over-the-top. If you are okay with a crop-sensor then I highly recommend it.

But, that said the 24-105 is a great lens, so you can't go wrong if you decide to get the 5D instead.

If you're on macro, wildlife or sports then go for the 7D. For everything else, get the 5d2.
However, if you can save some cash later, I would say to go for the 7D and wait for the 5d3

I'm not in macro, wildlife or sports i just take pictures for fun and to sell some of them (not many).

I really likes nicoles set up with the 7D and the 24-105 4.0 L IS from Canon but this will quite costs the same as the 5D Mark II Bundle.

It's a hard decision..... any more ideas?

Yeah. Tell me about it, Amos. I get more confused the more I read. Does Canon make lenses that work on both FD and DX cameras? Are none of your lenses compatible with the 5D mkII?

Why 7D at all. Buy 550D some L lens and wait MK3.

Whichever body you go for, you won't get the best out of it without very good lenses. Your existing glass may help you get going without too much cash up front, but the difference with the best lenses can be huge, and it'll be well worth upgrading when you can.

We have the 5DII with 24-105, and it's hard to beat for quality and versatility, but it makes a big chunk of hardware to lug around. Whatever you go for, enjoy it!

If you already have three EF-S lenses and you like them I'd go with a 7D.

7D has a very high pixel density and using it with anything but the best lenses is not a good idea IMHO.Moreover, the 24-105L is not very wide on the short end on a crop body.

I've now both the 5DmkII and the 7D: I purchased the 7D mostly for wildlife with the 100-400. AF on the 7D is definitively better and 8FPS is quite impressive if you need it.

But considering that you are not into wildlife/sport, 5DmkII with 24-105L is probably the best choice for you.

I think you want to buy a new camera rather than need to.

And I think you would be better off getting some better lenses first

You are maybe right - i have a 450D and i think i need a new camera rather then new lenses. I don't wanna spend money in lenses and use my old 450D with them.

So 5D Mark II with 24-70 or 24-105?

Digital camera bodies are effectively 'disposable' whereas good glass, if taken care of, is forever.

Try selling a camera body that is 2-3 years old and also an L lens of the same age (or even 4x older) and see which of them holds their value better.

In 2003 I bought a Canon 10D (for about $1800!) together with a 16-35mmL and a 100-400mmL. The camera body is now virtually worthless but I could probably recoup 80% of the cost of the lenses if I were to sell them. Of course I still use the lenses all the time so I wouldn't sell them.

I really dont understand what you want. From you port views do you think that if you catch 7D or MK2 it will be outstanding better?!?
NO! 550D has min 90% performance as 7D but in plastic case. Who cares is it plastic or titanium or other alloy if we are changing cam body every one or two years.
Anyhow how you catch image from electronic microscope?
