It was released today http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/01/09/CanonG1X_Preview

It's nice but not for me. I have a GF-1 and love it. Just picked up an S100. My next purchase will most likely be a mirrorless like an NEX-7.

9 focus points is a bit of a let down, probably similar to the 5DMk2

Have a G12 as carry everywhere camera now, but this one is certainly looking very tempting!

The sensor size is a big improvement.  Not much bigger than the other G cameras.  If it can be used for video for stock sites, I will get one.

Looks good for me, but only if noise is acceptable at 400ISO.

At the moment I use a sony nex5, but if video is good on this one, I´ll consider it!

Is it only me, or has the dpreview link, which worked earlier, gone offline?

On the other hand, the UK price is £699 from WEX

I think I'll have to pass.  Sad

I think that's a reasonable price, when you consider it usually comes down a lot after those with more money than sense have finished pre-ordering them.  It has to be priced higher than the G series and if the image quality matches other sensors around this size, I think it's going to sell well.

Carry everywhere camera switch a roo! Have pre-ordered the G1 X, which should become available here in Sweden at the end of February.

The year old fantastic G12 with 2-3000 shots on it and in excellent condition is for up for sale.

Looks like the camera I've been waiting for. However, I follow enenews.com and I'm very conscious of the effects of Fukushima. I would love to know whether this model will be made in Japan, and if so, how radioactive they are. I'm actually serious.

I've tested it - not at all radioactive Wink

Can't really see why you'd get this instead of something like the Panasonic GX-1, or a G3 if money is tight.

Firstly it is a Canon and it is always nicer to stay with a brand if you are happy with it and got good experience with that particular brand etc.

Secondly things like the speedlights for the 5D MkII works on the G1 X without a hitch, as well as common software for it and the 5D MkII (DPP and other bundled software).

Thirdly, it is similar in handling to the G12, so really easy to get going.

Fourthly (?) it is a Canon.

However the Panasonic GX1 looks nice enough, but I'm sticking to Canon, always have, just easier. It is like with cars...after your first Volvo you won't even look at another brand Wink

The main reason for me would be size.  The Canon looks much smaller than either of those cameras with the equivalent lens.  The Panasonic GX-1 doesn't have a viewfinder, the Canon has a poor one but it's very useful at times.  Then there's the enclosed sensor that never gets dust spots and never needs cleaning.

G12 is not discontinued, which means this is a product on it's own. Price at BH is still listed as $799 - pre-order.

Really basic information for the question:

Dimensions (wxhxd): 116.7 x 80.5 x 64.7 mm
Weight: Approx. 534 grams with battery and SD card

G12 =
Dimensions (WxHxD): 112.01 x 76.20 x 48.26 mm
Weight    12.4 oz / 352 g

Shooting modes: Intelligent Auto (with Scene Detection), P, Tv, Av, M, C1, C2, Discreet,  Movie,  Special Scene  (Movie Digest, Portrait, Landscape, Kids & Pets, Sports, Smart Shutter with Smile, Wink Self-timer & Face Self-timer, High-speed Burst HQ, Handheld Night Scene, Beach, Underwater, Foliage, Snow, Firework, Stitch Assist)

Focus system: TTL Autofocus with Face AiAF, Tracking AF, Centre, FlexiZone frames; range 40 cm to infinity; macro to 20 cm

Lens: 15.1-60.4 mm, f/2.8-f/5.8 (28-112mm in 35mm format)

Image formats: Stills - CR2.RAW, JPEG (Exif 2.3), RAW+JPEG; Movies - MOV (H.264/PCM audio, 2-channel stereo)

Sequence shooting: Max. 4.5 fps for 6 frames; AF and LV approx 0.7 frames/sec

All the rest of the usual.  Wink

Plus a question. Does anyone use any of these: built into the camera creative?

Creative Filters: High-dynamic Range, Nostalgic, Fisheye Effect, Miniature Effect, Toy Camera Effect, Monochrome, Super Vivid, Poster Effect, Colour Accent, Colour Swap

I've used the "fake" HDR and fish-eye effects and gotten those accepted at various places.

The G1X posted a 60 score on DXOMark which seems pretty impressive. My GF1 has a mid-50s score and has excellent image quality so this makes the G1X a little more interesting. Also no extra lenses to buy or carry around. But the NEX-7 is coming soon too. So many choices.

I'm not really a fan of Sony in general, but I had a look at a demo Nex 7 in a store recently - it actually seems really well put together. If they bring out some more lenses it could be the perfect traveling stock camera.

Good news. I have a G12 and I suppose I can play with those settings while I dream of the G1x?

Wondering how well the HDR actually works. That would be nice if it means no software needed. Now I need something besides, brown, dirt and snow.

There's two new Sigma compacts on the way with their excellent new sensor.  They have fixed focal length lenses but are more poketable and hopefully they wont make the mistake of overpricing these.  My interest in the Canon will evaporate if Sigma price these right.
