I see one forum that says the wireless remote works, but of course not from behind the camera.

Any wired remotes that would work, or is this only the IFR sensor?

I'm trying to get some birds nesting, and don't want to disturb them. I believe the T2i has a limit of 12 minutes, so I'd have to shoot, watch a clock, wait for it to stop, and start again.

Or does anyone have experience (not guessing like me) if I could use the computer camera control and a laptop/netbook with a long cable. I don't mind having a 25 foot cable.

Or any ideas?

Magic Lantern 2.3 has a feature that will do that.  "movie restart" it says you will lose a some few seconds in between each clip.

Thanks, I'm trying to hide a camera in the bushes to get flocking and roosting birds at Sunset, and I wasn't sure if I could do it with the remote and a laptop (and a really long USB cable!) or just some remote. I'll go look for that.

The birds didn't like me standing and watching, so I may have to dress as a Shrubbery  :) and hide on the edge of the scrub grove. I just thought that a remote on a tripod would be starting with the easiest.

Magic Lantern is a good start.

Actually, the T2i (as well as the 5DII, 60D, 7D, etc) have a 4GB file-size limit, and no time limit at all. I would think that in a situation like the one you're referring to with not much motion, you may get quite a bit more time out of 4GB. It also has to do with how much detail is captured, so if you're using a very wide aperture and blurring the background significantly, that will also help lengthen your recording time.

I think you could control it with a laptop, although I've never had a reason to try it.  From what I understand you don't need to stand there for magic lantern to keep recording it will automatically restart recording again when the max is reached.

Hmm, I thought I read the manual and it said, 12 minutes and the video will stop, but then you can start again?

One says: "It is the limit, due to FAT32--which is the way the card is formatted. The 12 minute limit is the "hard limit"--no matter how large the file is, the camera stops recording at that point."

Another says: "The 12 minute limit is only with 4GB cards. A 16GB card would give you 49 minutes."

So my answer is, format an 8GB card, start it up and see when it stops.  :D I'll report back. (so much for finding a correct answer on the Internet...)

Thanks for the data tip also. I suppose I need to get recording before the birds leave for the Winter?

Yes, that's another feature of the software.

As usual, I'm doing some stupid project with little value, and there are always these complications.

Another reason for the remote, is, record with a motion detector, unattended. Seems like it should be simple enough. Say for wild animals, office security camera or trains? LOL

Maybe I need to think a different device that does HD video?

I instal ML on MK2 just few hours ago.
It takes me about hour to dig out that they pop up menu with new 50-100 bursting improvements are switching on pressing Trash button on camera  ;D
I read manuals on fly but cant remember Trash button...
Its late now to play with but I think there are some useful tools if you know how to control them.

Yes, they use an inactive button, because the Trash Can does nothing until you are in view mode. That gets you into the menus. Many useful functions and enhancements, things that a pro video or someone much smarter than I, could use. I need to learn more and make some more mistakes, before I move into their version of the OS. I still can't get the T2i to focus right with everything automatic, I don't need to get into zebra stripes, manual audio levels and trap focusing. ???
