Title: New Wacom Intuos 5 Tablet
Post by: LesHoward on March 04, 2012, 02:43
Many photographers use tablets for photo editing. Wacom has just recently announced the Intuos 5. http://www.wacom.com/en/Products/Intuos.aspx (http://www.wacom.com/en/Products/Intuos.aspx)

I am sorely tempted - I have so many times tried to use touch gestures on my Wacom 3. Perhaps some terrible "accident" can befall my trusty tablet...

I still use my trusty mouse but I'm tempted to try a tablet. What size do you recommend for photography?

I'm still using my Intuos II.
It may not be the slickest looking pad on the planet, but its bullet proof and still gets the job done just fine.
Not tempted to change anytime soon.

I have the Intuous 3 6x11 wide, and it works very well for me. Before that I had a large 12 x something Intuous and it was fine, but I don't think I needed it to be that big to be useful. When you're working on fine details, you need to zoom in a lot (illustrations or photoshop) so the smaller tablets work fine.

I've been using a tablet for about 12 years and couldn't imagine working without one any more, but I know some people have tried and really don't like them.

It is very redundant for photogs to use intuos for photo editing.. I am an illustrator, doing pretty good with wacom bamboo, can easily buy a cintiq, but can't convince myself that I definitely need it..

Cintiq in my opinion is only necessary if one day I decide to use it for digital paintings, because bamboo (or intuos) are good enough for vector drawings.. When it comes to creating digital paintings that look like real oil paintings Cintiq is what you must have..

Bamboo is good!  Intuos is an expensive bamboo! :) If you, at all, are going to upgrade, go for cintiq because I think having a bamboo or intuos is pretty much the same thing..

Redundant? I think the word you were going for is overkill.
In any event, I disagree. I have an old Intuos and a bamboo that I use for traveling with my laptop. The Bamboo works ok in a pinch, but it lags a bit and does not offer the same fine control as an Intuos.
Also, I don't think you understand photo editing at all or at least not retouching. Retouching is very much like painting, and requires fine control not the gross global adjustments I think you are alluding to when you say 'editing'.

I've got a cheaper Wacom, can't remember what it's called, not Intuos
I use it for everything, haven't a clue where the mouse is. Took about four days to be really comfortable with it, but I hid the mouse to make sure I wouldn't revert.

Awesome! I will be buying the medium one as soon as :)

About retouching with a tablet, put it this way, I cant retouch with a mouse anymore, and there are things you cant do with a mouse when you are retouching that you can with a tablet.

I used the model 4 a lot but have never been happy with the buttons. They are cheesy at best. I wonder if the 5 is any better.

I do understand and for that much touching (painting like touching) bamboo is just enough.. Because it is still "painting like touching" and not "digital painting"..

You can definitely go with intuos If you like burning money.. Of course you don't have to agree, that is why I said "in my opinion"..

If you really need to make a difference, then you should go with cintiq, not intuos.. My next tablet will be cintiq, if I am sure I need to upgrade, otherwise will just stick to bamboo.. Definitely don't see myself getting an intuos..

I too use my (Wacom) tablet for everything; that is, everything I can use it for. Most 3D modeling software still requires the use of a 3 button mouse (although some allow tablets).

I switched to a tablet full time because it is so much easier on my wrist. I was getting that repetitive wrist syndrome thing big time from using a mouse - I tried different kinds of mice and trackballs, but only the tablet lets me work pain free.

I have an intuos and the client site i goto has bamboo. There is a pretty noticeable difference between those products and i must say that i have been spoiled by my experience with intuos as the bamboo isnt as sensitive. I guess thats why bamboo's are much cheaper.

I use a mouse and a bamboo but have been debating upgrading to intuos for a while now. I tried out an intuos in a shop but didn't really notice any major difference to the bamboo. I guess you have to use it for a while to notice any real difference.

It's because there is no enough difference to justify an intuos over bamboo..

Sensitivity is way too overrated because you can adjust pressure sensitivity in Photoshop brush settings.. If you like to upgrade, go for cintiq.. Yes, it is more expensive but at least it is a real upgrade, not some marketing strategy..

Also the fancy buttons that intuos have, are useless :) My bamboo has 4 buttons on the tablet and I don't remember using them once.. I only use keyboard shortcuts and the pen..

I don't agree about the buttons at all - they are essential to me and in constant use (at least the ones on the left - I'm right handed)

I have an Intuous 3 (I think they changed the arrangements a bit on the 4 and I'll have to check out the 5). My left hand can zoom with the touch pad (I do it a ton when working in Photoshop); I hold the bottom botton and use the pen to scroll windows up and down; the left button is control, top right is shift and bottom right is option (I'm on a Mac - that's Alt on a PC).

I do use keyboard shortcuts a ton too - and I wish I had something with less of a reach to do those with my left hand - but I use those modifier keys constantly and it has helped so much with the aches and pains while working.

I realize everyone's workstation and workflow varies a bit, but along with getting an adjustable chair with good back support, getting the setup with keys, tablet, & keyboard was essential to avoiding problems with long term, long hour computer work editing and drrawing.

Also, you shouldn't assume that photographers editing don't draw much - it depends how much masking and compositing you do. I spend a ton of time painting in Photoshop, mostly on masks.

Can i put photoshop CS5 on this tablet to edit my images?

What is different with this tablet and the Samsung one?

Thanks for your reply.

I still using Intuos 3 and loving it... it's all scratched up but it's so "intuo-itive" for me:) I've programmed the buttons on it and almost never use the keyboard... well except for typing:) I can't even imagine now retouching with a mouse. The bad thing is I am so used to the button and scroll functions on the tablet that it's totally automatic for me, I hate to think about upgrading - they moved all the buttons to one side! Re-learning that would be like re-learning to play a piano after someone switched around the keys...

Here's a video review of the new Intuos 5 from long time user Terry White. http://networkedblogs.com/vcRnB (http://networkedblogs.com/vcRnB) Many features are demonstrated.

He favors the medium size for most of his work.

However his comment brings an interesting side question, albeit involuntarily.

Wouldn't it be even easier using a tablet computer - being able to edit directly on screen - instead of a graphic tablet?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11666162 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11666162)

If it's good enough for David Hockney for art, maybe it's good for us too?

Or screen resolution is too low/touch screen too imprecise/not pressure-sensitive/editing software not available? I don't have an iPad or similar - however strange nowadays - so I can't try (I am still using my old Nokia N810 tablet for emailing and browsing when I travel, great but definitely not good for graphics)

Hi guys!
I want to buy a tablet for retouching, but don't want to spend much. It would be my first tablet and I'm thinking to buy a small one. Does anyone working on small size? Is it possible to do a quality job on it? I don't have any experience with tablets...

Thanks :)

I have been working on a bamboo for a couple of years and it has been sufficient. I have been doing some creative stuff though and wanted the pen-tilt capabililty, so I just got an Intuos 5 Small and it is more than big enough. I have a difficult time working on images in PS without the tablet. The mouse just doesnt cut it.

edit: I think the Bamboo would be good for you to start out with. It runs somewhere between $66 and $90 dollars (depending on where you buy) and you can try it out and get used to it while not spending an arm and a leg for it.

I saw lenovo windows 8 laptop in another thread...looks really nice, but I think its price is over 1000$. In my case that would be a few years rather then months :)
but I see your point, thanks for suggestion

Bought it to avoid RSI issues and improve PS workflow, never looked back.

If PS4 is coming out next month, you don't go out and buy PS3 now   :)

Windows 8 tablet/laptops are coming out in probably weeks.. And they will really make a difference.. Why burn your money on old laptops while you can get a touchscreen windows 8 laptop in a few weeks?

Well, first of all I'm on a Mac so the fact that Windows 8 tablet/laptops are coming out is of no interest to me. And even if Mac comes out with something similar, I cannot justify running out and buying the latest and greatest when the computer I currently use is working perfectly fine and I couldn't afford to replace right now anyway. In a perfect world, I'd be sitting behind a Cintiq, but for the same reasons, I am not.

I understand what you are saying. Totally. But the OP can invest around $100 bucks and continue to use what he is using and yet improve his workflow, as opposed to waiting, and having to invest a ton more money just for the latest gadget. Two schools of thought, and in my circle of friends and family, I know both types.  :)

Well, I wasn't replying to the OP in my last answer..

At first, I did suggest him that because he didn't specify that he only had $100 to spend.. But after the OP mentioned that his budget was small I left it there..

My answer was to warrenprice who said "Waiting for the LATEST technology is a never-ending wait. "

because it's a "soon ending wait".. In fact, I just found out that it is coming out on 26 october..

Assuming some people who read this thread can afford it, it is good to mention it anyway..  :)

I wouldn't want to buy something NOW, and next month say "Oh man, I could have gotten the other thing, had I only waited a month"

October 26 ... will that be the end?  Or, have they started designing a replacement?
If it does what you want and you need it, why wait for something else to want?

I want a new camera.  The D7000 is probably already obsolete -- but it does most of what I need.  I see no sense in waiting for the D5 or D4xsq ... or D900.   ::)

It's just a different opinion, Cidepix.   :-\

also 'never-ending wait' is true...there's always something new, that's how industry is - but still it is good to choose wisely.

Warren, I totally understand your point.. and october 26 is not the end but at least we know windows 9 isn't comind out in january :) it will be at least 2 years before the next one comes..

Personally for me, current laptops do NOT do what I want.. At the moment I need to change my laptop because it is getting old..

So I will get a new one anyway.. I want to be able to draw vectors directly on the new touchscreen windows 8 laptops, and I would be devastated if I burned my money on a laptop that I can NOT do that, just to find out a month later, the laptop I can actually do that is out..

Yes, Bamboo is good.. I currently use bamboo for my vectors and it is more than enough.. Very good choice..

It's just that I want to draw directly on the screen, that's why I am waiting for the device I can sufficiently do it.. Once I have a touchscreen that I can directly draw on, that will be the one for me for at least 3-4 years.. So in my case it is an ending wait.. I won't be after a new touchscreen every other month, once I have the one that can do what I want..

That is not worth the switch to another OS.
Besides, it's his first tablet so a Bamboo is cheap and will already improve his workflow.
Wacom pens for touch screens? what about the Cintiq?

cintiq was the best thing you can get as a designer until the touchscreen PCs became very popular.. I was actually going to buy a cintiq, and had the budget for it, but decided to buy a tablet/laptop with a touchscreen that I can draw on instead.. and they are out very soon..

Regarding OS, I use windows anyway, so I won't be switching my OS :)

cintiq was great but it will soon be part of history.. Even wacom knows that.. they started doing pens, and I suggest they start doing tablet laptops as well, with cintiq features integrated in it..

Anyone ever tried one of these MonoPrice tablets (http://www.amazon.com/Inches-Graphic-Drawing-Tablet-Hot/dp/B004C4ZT0G)? I've heard good things, and although reviews generally say they're not a direct alternative to a Wacom, they're still really good for just $50. I've been tempted to try one.
