Many photographers use tablets for photo editing. Wacom has just recently announced the Intuos 5. http://www.wacom.com/en/Products/Intuos.aspx

I am sorely tempted - I have so many times tried to use touch gestures on my Wacom 3. Perhaps some terrible "accident" can befall my trusty tablet...

I still use my trusty mouse but I'm tempted to try a tablet. What size do you recommend for photography?

I'm still using my Intuos II.
It may not be the slickest looking pad on the planet, but its bullet proof and still gets the job done just fine.
Not tempted to change anytime soon.

I have the Intuous 3 6x11 wide, and it works very well for me. Before that I had a large 12 x something Intuous and it was fine, but I don't think I needed it to be that big to be useful. When you're working on fine details, you need to zoom in a lot (illustrations or photoshop) so the smaller tablets work fine.

I've been using a tablet for about 12 years and couldn't imagine working without one any more, but I know some people have tried and really don't like them.

It is very redundant for photogs to use intuos for photo editing.. I am an illustrator, doing pretty good with wacom bamboo, can easily buy a cintiq, but can't convince myself that I definitely need it..

Cintiq in my opinion is only necessary if one day I decide to use it for digital paintings, because bamboo (or intuos) are good enough for vector drawings.. When it comes to creating digital paintings that look like real oil paintings Cintiq is what you must have..

Bamboo is good!  Intuos is an expensive bamboo! :) If you, at all, are going to upgrade, go for cintiq because I think having a bamboo or intuos is pretty much the same thing..

Redundant? I think the word you were going for is overkill.
In any event, I disagree. I have an old Intuos and a bamboo that I use for traveling with my laptop. The Bamboo works ok in a pinch, but it lags a bit and does not offer the same fine control as an Intuos.
Also, I don't think you understand photo editing at all or at least not retouching. Retouching is very much like painting, and requires fine control not the gross global adjustments I think you are alluding to when you say 'editing'.

I've got a cheaper Wacom, can't remember what it's called, not Intuos
  • . Had it for years, through three PCs. Just a small live area (5" x 3 5/8"), which is plenty enough for photo work; an illustrator might need a bigger area, ICPS.

I use it for everything, haven't a clue where the mouse is. Took about four days to be really comfortable with it, but I hid the mouse to make sure I wouldn't revert.

  • Brain kicked in: it's a Graphire.

Awesome! I will be buying the medium one as soon as :)

About retouching with a tablet, put it this way, I cant retouch with a mouse anymore, and there are things you cant do with a mouse when you are retouching that you can with a tablet.

I used the model 4 a lot but have never been happy with the buttons. They are cheesy at best. I wonder if the 5 is any better.

I do understand and for that much touching (painting like touching) bamboo is just enough.. Because it is still "painting like touching" and not "digital painting"..

You can definitely go with intuos If you like burning money.. Of course you don't have to agree, that is why I said "in my opinion"..

If you really need to make a difference, then you should go with cintiq, not intuos.. My next tablet will be cintiq, if I am sure I need to upgrade, otherwise will just stick to bamboo.. Definitely don't see myself getting an intuos..

I too use my (Wacom) tablet for everything; that is, everything I can use it for. Most 3D modeling software still requires the use of a 3 button mouse (although some allow tablets).

I switched to a tablet full time because it is so much easier on my wrist. I was getting that repetitive wrist syndrome thing big time from using a mouse - I tried different kinds of mice and trackballs, but only the tablet lets me work pain free.

I have an intuos and the client site i goto has bamboo. There is a pretty noticeable difference between those products and i must say that i have been spoiled by my experience with intuos as the bamboo isnt as sensitive. I guess thats why bamboo's are much cheaper.

I use a mouse and a bamboo but have been debating upgrading to intuos for a while now. I tried out an intuos in a shop but didn't really notice any major difference to the bamboo. I guess you have to use it for a while to notice any real difference.

It's because there is no enough difference to justify an intuos over bamboo..

Sensitivity is way too overrated because you can adjust pressure sensitivity in Photoshop brush settings.. If you like to upgrade, go for cintiq.. Yes, it is more expensive but at least it is a real upgrade, not some marketing strategy..

Also the fancy buttons that intuos have, are useless :) My bamboo has 4 buttons on the tablet and I don't remember using them once.. I only use keyboard shortcuts and the pen..

I don't agree about the buttons at all - they are essential to me and in constant use (at least the ones on the left - I'm right handed)

I have an Intuous 3 (I think they changed the arrangements a bit on the 4 and I'll have to check out the 5). My left hand can zoom with the touch pad (I do it a ton when working in Photoshop); I hold the bottom botton and use the pen to scroll windows up and down; the left button is control, top right is shift and bottom right is option (I'm on a Mac - that's Alt on a PC).

I do use keyboard shortcuts a ton too - and I wish I had something with less of a reach to do those with my left hand - but I use those modifier keys constantly and it has helped so much with the aches and pains while working.

I realize everyone's workstation and workflow varies a bit, but along with getting an adjustable chair with good back support, getting the setup with keys, tablet, & keyboard was essential to avoiding problems with long term, long hour computer work editing and drrawing.

Also, you shouldn't assume that photographers editing don't draw much - it depends how much masking and compositing you do. I spend a ton of time painting in Photoshop, mostly on masks.

Hello.

Sorry for my misunderstanding.

Can i put photoshop CS5 on this tablet to edit my images?

What is different with this tablet and the Samsung one?

Thanks for your reply.

David.

I still using Intuos 3 and loving it... it's all scratched up but it's so "intuo-itive" for me:) I've programmed the buttons on it and almost never use the keyboard... well except for typing:) I can't even imagine now retouching with a mouse. The bad thing is I am so used to the button and scroll functions on the tablet that it's totally automatic for me, I hate to think about upgrading - they moved all the buttons to one side! Re-learning that would be like re-learning to play a piano after someone switched around the keys...

You seriously need to get your "tablets" right  ;D

Samsung tablets or smart-phones has nothing to do with wacom tablets :)

I've been checking out the Intuos5. I haven't seen a clear answer on the question about size. There's small, medium, and large. What's the best size and why?

Here's a video review of the new Intuos 5 from long time user Terry White. http://networkedblogs.com/vcRnB Many features are demonstrated.

He favors the medium size for most of his work.

Thanks for the review. Wow that's pretty nice. Seems like small might even be the way to go for travelers.
