Notice how any new or surprising application of software is now called "AI". That term no longer means anything, except maybe that someone wrote a program to do something that used to seem difficult.

If you remember spam filters from the past when they could collect a lot of data from the past they could calculate statistics and detect spam messages in the future. Now they call this programs AI but the only difference is that they can handle an enormous amount of data to calculate these stats. Training them is probably similar. More data they collect more accurate there are.

Problem is these things they call AI aren't actually intelligent, they only do what they are programmed to do.
They'll learn to look for a certain histogram, certain composition but they won't ever understand creativity. DT has said that the editor's choice images are ones that make the editor go "WOW". How's a computer going to understand that?

Hate to disagree somewhat with a couple of the posts here, but if DT's software can change itself to be more effective then is indeed "machine learning", a term which many today prefer to "AI" but is really the same thing (also called "deep learning").

the software is not rewriting its code, it is updating its database. it is not artificially intelligent. what they are doing is nothing new.

I've been in computers and software since the 70s. Real progress in "AI" has been minimal. But huge progress has been made in using "AI" as a marketing buzzword.
What we have today are vastly faster processors equipped with vastly more memory, able to run algorithms quickly, on huge data sets, and therefore do things that used to seem impossible, like recognize faces in images. I worked briefly for a company in the facial recognition business; there's no "artificial intelligence" to be found. There are algorithms that scan an image, area by area, using math to pick out 2 similar and vaguely round areas with dark centers; those would be the eyes. Now search the region below them for 2 smaller dark spots and call it a nose; then below that, a vaguely horizontal line slightly darker than its immediate surroundings, possibly curved up or down...
