Title: DT Pricing Changes? Stay tuned...
Post by: red on April 09, 2012, 06:47
Another DT announcement from Achilles -

We will be testing a new set of prices during the following days. Don't worry if you receive royalties that are different or higher than what you are used to, they are correct and according to the percentages displayed in the Sell your images page (of course, for other credit values). Considering this is still under development, we will not be making any other announcements until we know the new structure works and is viable. Thank you.

I think they provided themselves an out...who says the royalties will necessarily be higher? Different can also mean lower.

Something going on with levels.  My 3s are now 4s; One sales jumps to level 2.
Yep:  can't figure out yet what will be level 1 or level 0?

Could be the answer to my question about the 28 cent subs?

I think you're right - mine have changed levels as well.  If the change is to get us more money then I hope it will be successful.

Don't hold your breath. My earnings at DT have essentially flat-lined for the last 4 years despite several changes to the pricing architecture and image levels (not to mention commission decreases). I actually earned slightly more in March 2008 at DT than I did last month.

If they don't fix the search, I don't care what levels they make the images, it won't make any difference to me :)

Tangie indicated things will be back to normal by the end of the week.  I haven't had an image downloaded on DT since March 28th and I'm $3.39 from payout.  It's killing me...

I noticed my levels were off (1 sale = level 2). I can see doing away w/ level 0 and just shifting the level #s.

I sure hope by different they don't mean less, and I hope that this doesn't come with another commission % decrease. Those have been quite damaging to my income in the past (not to mention my morale and feelings about DT).

I hope they get things all sorted out over there and can tell us what is really going on soon (and I  hope it is actually a positive change for the contributors too).

BTW - the images I uploaded mid day Friday were available to be processed on Monday. They still claim the normal 150 ish hour review time though.

Today I got first download for 2 different images . They are level 2 now, ok... but just one of them appear on earnings page. Other was reported on my Facebook, via "Dreamstime Promotion Tool".

Anyone notice something like that after this "level update"?

( Already report to DT Support )

Solved. FB Tool was faster than site itself :D

I noticed that for my sales, after the Price (in My Earnings window), it says 14 credits (2010). What does that (2010) mean? It is after all the sales except for subscriptions. Sorry if it was discussed before, I missed it.

2010 is a misleading indicator. It means that your image was purchased with credits that were bought with 2010 pricing. It is a type of credit, not the exact year in which they were bought. Prior to that there were 2008 credits and they were good up to 2010 and beyond if the buyer still had some left over when the 2010 credit prices went into effect. There were no 2009 or 2011 or 2012 credits. So, the last credit price change was in 2010 and that's how they refer to the credits. Seems they could come up with a different name, probably just "credits".

Every time sites raise their prices, I seem to get an earnings boost with SS :)  Price increases have such a high correlation with lower commissions and flat or lower earnings in recent years, I'm not going to get excited until we're told the full details.

It does seem so. It appears to me that buyers prefer simple pricing structures that they can easily budget for. How complex or bizarre can DT's latest effort be if they can't even reveal it to their contributors?

<sigh> Yes, probably. DT have surely been at the game for long enough now and should have more than enough data to have identified the 'sweet spot' for pricing. They shouldn't need to be playing these 'smoke and mirrors' games. It won't help them in the longer term.

Only 1 in April so far (unusual even for me).  This was a level 2 sale on a level 1 image which I thought was a bug but possibly something to do with the changes. No benefit though as it was one of those discounted referral subs  :-\

I had a pretty good day of sales yesterday (Monday) considering it was the day after Easter.  Actually pretty normal for a recent Monday.  Hard for me to notice big differences from the pricing change, since prices are typically all over the map.  All the pics sold yesterday appear to be level 2 thru 5.  Maybe my 1s became 2s?  Hard to tell.  I don't really track that.  Can you tell by number of sales?  For instance, one of my 2s has had 4 downloads.  Would that have been a level 1 before the change?  I'm not sure what is going on.

Yes.

I've had no sales there this week so haven't seen any effect of the altered pricing.  Last week it was normal subs sales and a few credit sales - hopefully it will pick up.

Just had my first sale since March 28th.  15 credit image sale for $6.72.  It's a level 4 image (used to be level 3).

From the responses to this thread, it sounds like licenses through subscriptions are going down in price but individual image credit sales are going up?  Interesting strategy.

I'm anxious to hear the official announcement.

My recent sub sales have all been at the usual prices.  Maybe some people have just had some comissions from partners and are assuming that it is the new pricing

But the amounts we see for sub sales is remaining the same, right?  I'm seeing a bunch of .35, .70 and 1.05 sub commissions today.

EDIT:  OK, just noticed that I haven't seen a .35 commission in a few days... the subs have all been .70 and 1.05... so the .35s have been elevated to .70 due to the level step up.  That's certainly a welcome change!!!

If DT will increase the prices even more.... than this measure will be the tombstone for this agency. I hope they see the market direction and eliminate that lvl system, or reduce him to 2 max. 3 lvl. Fewer and fewer wants to pay 7, 9 or 11 credits for a EXTRA SMALL image. The majority will just migrate elsewhere (that why FT is above DT at this moment).

I got .28 for subs in the past, but mostly they have been the standard lately, (and some were at higher levels than their sales suggest).

I have gotten as low as about .18 per credit, generally anything under .25 makes me angry.

I did notice the one EL I got since this latest bit of odd pricing was at the lower end of the payment scale (and level 1). (although now I see that it was the first sale so previously it would have been lvl 0 - so I suppose I should be glad).

I wish that the sites were a lot more transparent about what was paid for the image as well as what we get and why when there is some oddity.

None of my files that sold climbed up in levels, it seems only the bad news some of you expected came true; I got payed less than ever for a level 0 XS DL:

1 credit (2010)   $0.18   extrasmall

And here is at least one reason why it could happen.

Interestingly enough, when I am logged in, DT for my port still shows the same old levels, while after logging out and deleting their cookies, my images goes up by one level when browsed...

Even more interestingly, it is reflected in my earnings as well. On April 10, when the level mess was already up and running, two images were reported as sold in accordance with the old levels scheme (namely, as a level 2 and 3 sales), while for buyers, they were already available (and apparently bought) as a level 3 and 4 purchases respectively...

Well done, DT! Really well done!...  >:(

I tried a search for an image that recently sold as level 5 (previously level 4) and for my search it came up as a level 4, I tried w/ a different browser - no DT cookies- and it came up much higher in the search and was also listed as a level 4. I suspect that they are messing around w/ different levels for certain regions or buyers or alternating days or something. I'd be pretty annoyed if I was a buyer.

I sure do wish there was more transparency though - for instance are the commission %s changing with the changing levels? (it certainly appears the number of credits needed are).

ah - I see the different search order was because the default is most dl but on my logged in acct. it was set to most relevant. (so I suppose they have that search fixed).

I misspoke.  The previous sale was at Level 2, which bumped the image to Level 3.  The latest "experiment" then skipped the Level 3 to Level 4.
In any case, I got paid at the Level 4 rate --- I think?   :-\

Wow, got a ton of sales yesterday. There's something I don't understand; How is it possible that now, under this new level structure, images with 2 or 9 DLs are both level 2? Looks like some were promoted and others not. The one with 9 DLs is an older file, so perhaps there some kind of age/sales algorithm in place. That being said, earnings are slightly better, but would have been a lot better hadn't most of the sales been subs or cr sales that didn't benefit from the new level structure.

ETA edited for a typo (number of DLs)

Here's something that I don't get.  My most popular on there has had 14 credit dl's 2 times this month all at level 4 but the amount I got both were completely different.

Did this pricing change thing start in April?  Because that image got me $7.68 on the 3rd and then $6.32 on the 14th.  And every other 14 credit download at level 4 for that image my revenue was all different.  Some kind of discount?

Per the FAQs (it's been this way forever) -

I received unusual royalties for images sold. What could the explanation be?

Royalties different from the ones you see displayed on the Sell Your Images page are due to various factors.
The most common explanation is the actual credit value per each package a buyer purchases. The more credits the package has, the lower the price/credit. Each credit's value and hence royalties are now calculated at the real value paid by the buyer.
For example, 8 credits purchased with the $9.99 package, will bring the contributor a reference of $1.25/credit: the royalties for a 8 credits image will vary between $3 (non exclusives, level 1) or $6 for exclusives. A $99.99 credit-package will bring the buyer 108 credits, which translates into $0.93/credit. Royalties for a 8 credits image are $2.23 (non exclusives, level 1) and $4.46 for exclusives. Add to the above the possibility of having third party downloads through our alliances/referral programs or the value of withholding taxes for non-US contributors and you will understand why royalties values are so diverse. The price per credit PPC can also be affected by seasonal promotions and discount campaigns.

Are your sales updating in a timely manner or are they really lagging behind these last few days?  I'm used to seeing a little lag time in DT (sales get reflected in the total number in the upper right but the details can take an hour or two to show up).  But for the past few days, I've been seeing the prior day's sales showing up until around 9 am the following day, and only after the previous day being fully reported do the current day sales start showing up.  Wonder if this has to do with the recent changes being implemented?  Or is it just me?

I am hoping for this one. Got the Email about someone wanting to buy the rights to one image. A SR-EL. That would be a really nice bump in earnings...lol.

Also seeing very nice credit sales and fewer subs since the new pricing announcement.

But the reporting delay is pretty frustrating.  The day is half over and I'm still seeing sales crawling in from yesterday.  They're nice big sales... I'm not complaining... they helped make yesterday a BSunE... but no sales showing up from today yet.   Hopefully this is just a temporary lag and not the new normal.  I know... I should learn better patience.

If I'd have replied yesterday, I'd have agreed with you. However this morning I have 3 subs sales, for my grand total (which is bad enough of itself). One is for 32 cents and two for 26 cents. It's been ages since I've seen any of those discounted subs (referral bribes, I think was their excuse). For anyone new to the site (last June for me), this switch to best selling isn't good news, so at the moment, I don't see a lot to be happy about - and are buyers not buying because they don't like the price increases or because  they're buying all the golden oldies that are what shows up in current searches by default?

Some things about this new deal sure is weird. I'm getting level 2 sales for the 3rd DL of the file, while I just got a level 3 for a file that's been DLed 18 times. And that file has already been promoted to level 4 :-\  ??? :o

Yes.  It is very confusing.  I'm one, however, who is hesitant to complain.  My RPD is over $3.

UPDATE:  My sales -- which saw a nice bump from DT's recent tinkering, have fallen into the toilet...    Now around half or one-third of what they were in the tinkering period, and even lower than pre-tinkering.  Tons of sub sales.  Anyone else see a sudden shift starting Tuesday morning or so?

If by sudden change you mean stopped completely, then yes. (my sales are relatively low, so not all that statistically valid).  For the month my dl # is about 1/4 of last month but my RPI is about 2X last month. Hopefully it is just a reporting lag and there are still sales. I think that the % of subs sales hasn't changed a whole lot, but more of them are higher level and the regular sales are for a good bit more than average for me.

All true.  It seems there's a drastic shortage of systems engineers, programmers, coding people ... whoever, whatever it takes to keep IT going.  Shutterstock is having problems too.  It's an epidemic.   >:(

I was searching DT today and didn't have any problem using the search.  It does look like there's been a search change in the past 24 hours or so though.  "Most relevant" was skewing toward downloads, and now appears to be heavily weighted to newest instead.

There are several threads addressing these issues and others in their forum, Lisa.
I'm not allowed to post there but try to follow the "goings on."   ;D

I ran into the "categories dropdown menu" problems with my last upload.  Tangie called it a "sorting" problem.

There are a lot of questions about that in the forum.  My sales are actually pretty good.  Maybe the search is favoring misfits?   :P ;D

I think this might be affecting me. I have only had one .35 sale in the past 4 days. Which is unusual. Prior to that this month, I had a few sales every day, moving my total commission up nicely.  >:(

I don't look on facebook for sales, but it does seem that the sales stats update only once per day lately. The earnings balance might update more often. Someone who gets a lot more sales than I do could probably say more accurately.

In the good old days (from beginning of time to last Saturday or so), DT refreshes seemed to show updates every 20 minutes or so.  Last weekend they happened every 10 or 12 hours.  It has slowly been getting better all week.  This morning I seem to be seeing new downloads in small groups refreshed once an hour or so.

Stills shows as Level 1 to me too Anita (using IE9). There's a thread on the DT forum that says that IE users do not see a change but Google Chrome ones do. Hope that clarifies a bit! Kind regards, David.

Sunday was one of the worst sales days for met at DT in a long time.  Almost entirely sub sales and a very small amount of them.  If this is a result of the pricing changes, making my pics too expensive for the typical buyer, than count me in the apparent minority as someone who sees the new price model as a very bad thing.  Anyone else see an alarming number of subs on Sunday?

If every major agency would raise prices, buyers would take it as normal (they're getting huge discounts from day 1 anyway). In fact, quadrupling the prices would make them normal, barely normal, but at least they'd be in the "normal" area. Volumes would probably be split in half, but still, earnings would double ;)

There's nothing actually wrong with the prices that our images sell for; our real problem is the excessive commission that the microstock agencies take. The trouble is that we contributors have come to see such takes as 'normal'.

If phone app's can be sold profitably with only a 30% commission cut then so could our images.

I agree with you, but at the same time stand by my post. Getting full res images from 33c just can't be normal. As I said, volume would be (almost) split in half (half of the buyers would start stealing photos or start buying less), the other half doesn't have anywhere to go. Photos are not sold cheaper anywhere else than at MS agencies, it's not a normal state of the market (for instance macro buyers can turn to MS). In case both variables would change, our earnings would more than quadruple (of course that will never happen, so I don't even think about our royalty levels getting as high as 70%).

Sunday was an "all subs" day - although two of them were at 70 cents on images mysteriously bumped to level 3 (one had 6 sales and the other 12). I know others have commented on it, but I find it beyond bizarre that there are days at DT with all subs - often during the week - every now and then.

If price increases on credit sales drive buyers to subs, that's a bad thing for contributors. I don't have a problem with a higher take at the end of the month from my portfolio, but based on the last week or two, plus DT's already very complicated pricing (if I were a buyer, I'd find that a turnoff), I'm not at all confident that it will increase for me.  Cheering over a price increase until you see what it does to your volume seems naive to me.

To be fair, gostwyck, 30% commission on the app store just pays for running the app store itself, with no profit. Said that, 50% cut would seem fair to run a business with healthy profit.

I'm sorry but, is this an irony?

editing my post, but will not delete question

you were right, for company that big, it's really small:

"Munster says the average selling price of an app in the App Store is $1.44. Of that Apple nets $0.18 after you account for credit card fees and storage/delivery costs.

Since the App Store launched, Apple has earned a net profit of $538 million on paid app sales, estimates Munster. It has spent an additional $246 million on storing and delivering free apps, says Munster, suggesting Apple's true profit is just $292 million. "

It is their secondary business.

So there is a new lowest tier of commissions set at 20% ? Wasn't the previous new lowest tier of 25% for the then new Level 0 introduced not so long back. And the highest commission for the highest level images is now 45%, not 50%? Have I got this right?
