Title: Mysterious duplicate sales on Dreamstime
Post by: Groucho on November 18, 2017, 05:42
From time to time (4 occurrences in 3 months) I had the same photo selling twice in the same day on Dreamstime. I do not complain  ;D, but I would like to understand this phenomena  :o.

I started uploading photos to Dreamsted 3 month ago and have a limited number of sales on it (40 sales for 300 uploaded photos). So, I don’t think it can be two customers buying the same photos on the same day.

Did you had the same kind of behavior on Dreamstime and do you have a rational explanation on these duplicate sates? Is it mistakes from customers, mistake from Dreamstime or a "gift" from Dreamstime ?

Randomness doesn't always look random

"Poisson clumping, or Poisson bursts, is the phenomenon wherein random events have a tendency to occur in clusters, clumps, or bursts."

Maybe two designers in one office on the same project each download a copy, or perhaps it is to get round a usage restriction (i.e. only so many prints per download license - it could be  cheaper to get two individual licenses rather than one extended license). Or it could just be coincidence - the more images you sell in a day the more likely it is that a best-seller will go twice on the same day to different users.

A search algorithm might put popular files higher up in the list of results.

So if your file sells once in a day, it might move up the list of results, and therefore becomes more likely to sell again.

Is it mistakes from customers, mistake from Dreamstime or a "gift" from Dreamstime ?

I always considered it all of the above.

Another interesting coincidence I often observe is a sale of the same rather unpopular image simultaneously on two different sites for the minimum amount possible. I think it could be related to an attempt to bypass licensing restrictions.

I have noticed that on DT, and I think they are almost always searched for with the same search terms, so I suspect someone is just downloading (subscription) a bunch from that term, then they go back and get some more and get the same one again? I hope it isn't an attempt to avoid extended licenses. Maybe they double tapped the download button but as long as they don't run out of subs what do they care?

I just checked on 2 DL of the same image on the 15th and they were at the same time, 2 minutes later there was a different image DL with the same search terms. I also notice that multiples from a series get downloaded - maybe more often from DT because they tend to clump images from the same artist in search.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

I like the explanation provided by pancaketom : lazy customers with subscription contract downloading several files  after a search.

I checked the duplicate DL on my images, in 3 cases out of 4:
 - I had, in a range of 15 minutes, sales on others photos on the same subject
 - The duplicate DL occurred in a range from 0 to 3 minutes
 - In one case I even had a triple DL of the same photo in a range of 3 minutes
All this make the explanation of customers’ mistakes very probable. I only wonder why it only happen on DT.

Anyway, I like duplicate DL from lazy customers  :)

A search algorithm might put popular files higher up in the list of results.

So if your file sells once in a day, it might move up the list of results, and therefore becomes more likely to sell again.

That would be my guess as well.  But if it happened within a few minutes then sloppiness might be the answer.

I've noticed a slightly different phenomenon, where the same, not particularly popular, image gets downloaded from different agencies on the same day.  No idea why - probably just coincidence - but I'll take it.

On DT lately I tend to get runs of images on the same subject downloaded at once - it happens only rarely on other agencies.  Goes to show that DT's old policy of banning similars didn't make much sense to buyers - they like having multiple variations on the same theme.

Hope in this case no negative effect on payment

Same here. One day 5 downloads of the same pic, one after the other, $2 a time.
Await deduction of refund.

I had a double sale and then about an hour later one was refunded (of course they couldn't tell me why the refund because that would just be too hard for them). If I hadn't seen the double sale I wouldn't have known why.

"Due to the high volume of daily transactions, we cannot provide additional clarification on the refund performed. Measures are always taken for the licenses to be withdrawn and images deleted. Any subsequent unlicensed usage is liable to legal action and penalties.

It could be a lump deposit of partner sales too.
