Just received $0.35 from the kind people at Dreamstime for an XL image ranked "level two". XL + Level 2 purchase = $0.35? :o Makes me wonder why they even bother displaying level rankings.

That was a subscription. You used to earn 70 cent royalties for higher level subscriptions, but that was eliminated a few years ago.

Levels matter for credit sales (when they happen; I find the proportion of subscription sales keeps increasing)

A proportion of subscription sales increasing among general sales decreasing and tending to zero (any proportion of zero equals to zero)

That much for an XL? :-) I got 0.25  for an XL I sold on Fotolia. It was my first ever sold photo and I couldn't believe my eyes.

I got between $4-7 for 11 to 16 credit sales on a few Level 5 images recently, so it seems those have gone down too. I used to get a lot of $11+ sales before the prices changed. More than half my sales there are subscriptions these days, anywhere from 35 cents to $2.
Prices for most sales at the other micros aren't much better.

Out of my last 20 sales, 14 were regular subs, 2 were $2 subs and four were credits, so 80% subs.  Out of the 20 before that all but one was a sub so 95%.  The only good thing is that the subs advance the levels so you get more for the regular credit sales when they occur.  It's a far cry from what it used to be, but 35 cents for a sub is still much better than what you get for them at BS, CS, DP, 123RF, FT (most of the time) and even SS until you advance a couple of levels.  The idea at DT that buyers pay more credits for popular images that get downloaded a lot is good, rather than the same price regardless of popularity - too bad it doesn't seem to go well with buyers.
