Since i just got this camera myself I thought I would start a little chat thread (inspired by those others who started camera specific threads) about it for others who are considering it, or have it and have questions.

So here it is the latest model of the HV series
canon HV30

since i spent a while searching the net and finding and answer to this, i thought i would add it for others who come searching.

How to connect the Canon HV-30 to a computer

well it is quite simple, HOWEVER, you cannot use the usb cable that is supplied when you buy the camera.  That cord is just for direct connection to a printer (for printing your still images), and perhaps transfering the stills to the computer (but i haven't tried that so i am not sure)

To transfer video from the camera to computer you will have to BUY a firewire cable.  This isn't really that clear in the instruction manual (which leaves a bit to be desired imo).  Why doesn't canon include this in the box is beyond me.  Especially when they advertise that you can shoot in progressive mode which is supposed to be better for online video.

Great idea Leaf! Sorry the other thread started to get off topic.

The HVxx Camcorders are the perfect first HD cam for a stock videographer!

The firewire cable should definately be included, but at least they are easy enough to find. Firewire has been the standard for consumer/prosumer camcorders since (I believe) the old Sony digital-8mm and the first mini-dv camcorders.

How have you liked your HV30 leaf?  I ordered one last week and it is supposed to show up tomorrow.  Getting very excited, but a little stressed to on figuring out how to get video from camera to pc to istock.  Has that gone ok?  I did order a firewire cable after reading something somewhere about the usb issue.

I think I read on another thread that you were purchasing Adobe Premiere Elements.  I ordered version 4, hope it works ok.

Do you shoot in 1080p or 1080i?

Hi folks, I have in my hand my brand new hv-30,I just uploaded footages to IS, I'm excited but.. here is coming another bubble? I mean: a lot of photographers have understood the business (IS prices: 1 XL image = 2.40$ ; 1 video1080i = 10 $) so.. is the honeymoon over for footage?

haha.. fun video.

there it is embeded for you :)

Yeah so far i like the camera.  I don't really know much about it though so my opinion isn't very informative yet.  I shot one day and spent 1 day getting the footage into my computer converting the clips and editing them and submitting them to istock and shutterstock.

I am eagerly waiting to see if i did things right and am accepted or not.  I think my videos were somewhat boring (read: nature backgrounds) so not sure :( I just wanted to try stuff out mostly

I shot is 1080p mode, and then imported it as a 1080p video.. i wonder if i saw somewhere that the camera only exports in 1080i mode..... so not sure how that works, I could be wrong though, I need to read some more.

Looking forward to making more clips.

Oh yeah, and I ended up dumbing the wad on adobe creative sweet production premium.  I thought I wanted illustrator and after effects so it made sense to just get them all in a package.  I also recieved a very simple sound editing program which proved quite useful - along with a ton of 'tutorial' videos in the package which was nice.  now to try and earn some of these $$ back.

Thanks Leaf for the embed video.

I would like to share with you a simple and quickly workflow (100% freeware, look at IS video forum there are tons of threads) that help you bring your masterpiece from tape to buyers:

- firewire cable 4pin/4pin
- HDV split http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm [nofollow] (utility for capturing HDV stream): if you don't have a mac G8 or a Intel core6 is better to disable the preview during capture to prevent dropped frames.
- MPEG stream http://www.squared5.com [nofollow] video converter: basic edit tools (in/out cut), convert the .m2t files in mpgeg4 (proxy preview) or .mov file (I use Apple motion Jpeg A at 95%). You need to buy an Qtime Mpeg-2 plug-in for 20$/20euro (Steve, please drink a glass of expensive wine for me); I don't know why my QT alternative doesn't work for me.
- Upload the mov (or mpeg-4 for proxy) via http or ftp (I tried to use Filezila and cuteftp: both don't work well... maybe is just a issue with my broadband)

Enjoy your footages!

thanks for the tips.

I actually used HDV SPLIT as well because adobe premiere can't import video and do automatic scene split for HD video... crazy that a free program can but adobe can't.. hmmmm

well it only took 2 days to hear back from istock and I'm in :)  I guess the boring nature was OK
Still waiting for shutterstock - now there is something new.  Istock beat shutterstock in review time.

so now to upload the high res shots.

+1 in HV30 club  :D
I bought this camera yesterday and now I try to figure out   how to capture first video to my computer (win XP). There is no information about that in a manual. Canon's cd seems to be unuseless too  :-\ What a shame.

yeah it took me a while to figure it out actually... they don't even really tell you that you need a firewire cable - and still more crazy they don't include one.

Do you have the firwire cable (the usb one included is just for downloading photos)

Which software are you trying to use?  That HDV split program works good, and splits up the scenes into individual clips.

and.. congrats on the purchase :)

Thanks Leaf. I red one of your posts about firewire cable so I bought it. I'm using HDV split program, a connection between camera and computer works - I can play, stop tape from computer but no capture. Preview screen (on computer) is black. Preview screen on camera works.   When I try to record I have some kind of message "nothing to capture...". I'll fix it, I never give up ;D

are you sure you are not capturing video?  i think my capture screen was black too, but it still copied the video to the computer.

Yes, I'm sure. The capture folder is empty. No m2t file.

I have just ordered a HV30.  Will probably take a few weeks to work out how to use it but it is something to do in the UK winter.  I expect to take lots of footage of dark cloudy skies :)

I had a firewire lead with my old camcorder, so hopefully I can find it.  Better order a few tapes now.

Hmm.. well I can't say i understand everything about editing in premiere ... i am still fighting my way through it, but I think I have been editing and creating video in 1080p :)  That's what the settings said anyhow!

Well let me start:
Newtek SpeedEdit, Sony Vegas, Adobe Premier, Avid.. All of these software packages a capable of 1080p editing.
My favorite is SpeedEdit.

MTS video files are AVCHD codec file types. And if you install codec on your PC every software will read it correctly. But if you want to be absolutely sure Sony Vegas Pro will open it for sure.
Btw what camera produced such format? Is it some kind of Samsung camera?

here is a screen shot of exporting a video in progressive ntsc format

This is getting confusing... why would adobe say they can't export a progressive movie.

And from Adobe what you would like to export?. Witch codec and format you want to have at the end?
That depending on it. For example if you want to export as PHOTO JPG as top quality or AVI uncompressed there is no problem for exporting, but if you want to export to the MTS, h264, MPG2 (witch I don't recommend because of double MPG2 compression) it can be problem if Premier don't support that codec fully or you have just decompressor installed.

This is settings for editing and internal frame manipulation. Problem can occur when you export to the unsupported codec.
Mostly all main codecs are supported but some time depending on supported software for that codes and drivers also.

Btw, Leaf, I can edit posts on Mozzila any more. I click on edit and after finished I click save but nothing happend.
So I can't change my upper post. My english is not very well so to be clear I don't recommend any MPEG2 or MPEG4 recompression (MTS, h264,m2v...) because of more video artifacts in picture.

So if you want mov (PHOTO JPEG) export Adobe Premier can do it and it is doing it well :)

Just announced HV40 at CES 2009. I was thinking of getting a HV20 when there was no 30.  :)

Just can't wait to see what this one comes out for. No tapes, finally, although tape is still the best format, I wonder if this one will change that? As always, hard drive, you have to export. Mini-CD, unreliable. Memory, you will need to back up to something else, but a tape, you can put in a box on the shelf. One major negative with tape, is when it becomes tape spaghetti. After that, it's still the tops.

No price that I could find and like all the rest, it may take months before we really see one.

The VIXIA HF20 delivers brilliant video and photos through a Canon exclusive 3.89-megapixel CMOS image sensor and the latest version of our advanced image processor, DIGIC DV III. It is ultra lightweight - our smallest and lightest HD camcorder, and brings the ease and convenience of Flash Memory. This technology, the same used in advanced laptop computers, MP3 players, PDAs and cell phones, allows the VIXIA HF20 to record to both its large 32GB internal memory for over 12 hours of crisp, high definition video as well as to a removable SDHC card. You have extended available recording space and more flexibility in file transfer and playback.

What's more, the VIXIA HF20 allows you to record at up to 24Mbps, the highest bitrate in AVCHD format, for the highest quality image. The VIXIA HF20's Canon Exclusive features - such as the Genuine Canon 15x HD video lens, Genuine Canon Face Detection, SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization and a host of new control and creative options - makes our Flash Memory camcorder unmistakably Canon.

just read the news about Circuit City in USA. wonder if any of you living there could get some equipment for a deal during their liquidation.
sad continuing story of hard times nowadays, but i am sure some photographers will save some money getting to Circuit City before they close their doors.
sure there will be a mad stampede to clean house.
hope no one gets killed this time.

Haven't seen news of a closing sale, but there's a HV20 on my list. They had one at the outlet store (closed last month) listed as open box. I copied the price and went back to work. Looked it up and found it for less on the Circuit City website, new. These people didn't have a clue sometimes. The outlet store was always screwing with prices. Found a hard drive one day and bought it. Good deal, so I went back the next day and they raised the price to double. I asked what happened, was it marked wrong? The guy says, no we were selling them and people were buying them to sell on eBay, so we raised the price. What the heck is that? Price change because people liked it?

I did like the stores and the selection and the generally good prices. One less choice which leaves Best Buy as about the only big store around here. With any selection of computers, video, printers, and things I can usually use.

From their site:
Quote
Liquidation sales begin as early as Saturday, January 17, 2009, and will last as long as it takes to sell through the merchandise at each of the stores.  We expect the sales to wrap up by the end of March 2009.

I'll go check tomorrow morning after the first wave has passed through. I usually end up buying things like parallel cables and IDE cases that no one else would want.  ::) I'm still using envelopes, markers and things from the last day for an Office Depot store that closed four years ago. Can't pass a good deal.

one thing i find frustrating with the hv30 is the wide angle is very limited. In a room inside it is hard to capture much of what is going on. Perhaps a wide angle filter would be a nice accesory
