Title: Is GoPro good enough?
Post by: kmclachlan on May 24, 2018, 15:53
I've got a hero5+hero6. Both can do 4K with the 6 producing better quality - but I'm wondering is this "good enough"? I sort of assume it is, but I'd think 4K+Protune in a linear or at least not ultra-wide mode would be a good option for a small camera to always capture clips on the go?

Or should I just forget about the saleable footage with the gopro source content?

I've been filming with the same for certain action angles.  Just started filming with them this winter snowboarding.  Had a couple sales.  They're good for action shots and creative angles but don't really give a cinematic look for some situations.

Only for content that demands a GoPro to be there or the shot would't happen.

I have bought 4 or 5 gopro cameras and they are very very difficult to work with, and I think it was mostly a waste of time. they also get lost easily if you film in fast moving water.

although I was able to get sellable shots by mounting them on my car, however I get better shots just mounting a tripod to the car, so it is still irrelevant.

if I had to do it over again, I would never have bought a gorpro style camera.

Hmm interesting - I am well aware the gopro quality isn't way up there... but if something is filmed 4k in linear (no fisheye) mode, isn't that clip usable in a TON of usecases? If not at 4k, downscaling that to 1080p if that's all they need should still look really great? Especially compared to options from 2+ years ago?

My dslr records 1080p but the 4K codec is Motion JPEG which produces filesizes way too large for me to want to deal with

Shoot 4K and downscale to 1080p, should look pretty sweet. Shooting, exporting and selling 4K? In the unlikely event it gets approved, it will probably look good in the thumbnail but buyers will be disappointed with their purchase. Can't think of a specific term for it, but footage shot in GoPro's looks kind of 'muddy' with pixels clumped together in splodges. Hard to explain but you'll know when you see it.
