Hi Guys,

I am currently looking for a nice camera mostly for Video while being on the road with a bit of Time-lapsing in between.

What are your thought comparing these two cameras? Needless to say, when it comes to still images, the Sony is waaaay better and this is a huge advantage since I would not have to carry around my D810 for stills, but boiling things down to Video, how do these in your opinion compare?

The GH5 should be better for video but the Sony a7R II might be all you need. I don't see anything wrong with the GH5 for stills either, unless you use over 800 iso a lot.

The GH5 is definitely better for video and it captures 4:2:2 !

I recently rented a Sony a7R II to check it out and was not that impressed. It is more geared for photos.

The Sony also has the worst menu system with stuff scattered all over the place.

Thanks for all the responses! I am tempted with the A7R mostly because it could satisfy all my stills desires too - otherwise it would be a straight decision for the GH5, that what makes the decision so difficult.

I couldnt find a clear comparison regarding filming under low light conditions, maybe not enough Models of the GH5 are out there yet. Any ideas? Can it somehow compare to the Sony a7S (not R ii)?

I'm using A7R II for one year now.
It's great for photos (unless you want to do sport) I'm also using it for 4K stock footage.
If you feel like you need full frame and don't want to carry heavy gear around I think this is the best option.
A7R II might be better for low light video, but I'm not sure of that.

a7SII is the best low light camera on the market... Nothing comes close. You cannot compare it with a 4/3 sensor... GH4 was unusable past iso800, i guess GH5's limit is iso1600, for the a7SII it would be like iso51200 or iso102400

The GH5 will not compare to the a7S II regarding low light, no. Not at all. BUT, it will win in many other areas.

The 12 mp of the a7S, however, is quite low when it comes to timelapse/photos. It is JUST enough for a 4k timelapse without any possibility to crop in post if you want to keep the quality. Naturally, the 12 mp is the reason why it's so good in low light.

Regarding the a7R II, many professional timelapsers say it's probably the best timelapse camera in the world. The big downside seems to be the battery life, and you need to find a solution other than the internal battery when it comes to long timelapses.

No camera has it all...

a7R II - best for photos/timelapse.
a7S II - best for low light filming / full-frame look.
GH5 - best for overall filming up to ISO 800, maybe 1600. More of an allround camera.
