Title: Emerald + contributors
Post by: leaf on February 21, 2008, 07:21
I was just thinking that once a contributor reaches emerald rating on fotolia (10,000) sales, they are allowed to increase their prices by 2x and for each level reached after than you can increase your prices by 1x in addition to getting a larger %

So essentially the day you reach emerald you could get a 100% increase in revenue from fotolia if you switched your pricing scheme.

So the question here is, for those of you who are emerald or better contributors what do you have your prices set at?  the most, the least or somewhere in between?

that's a very good business question Leaf! I was thinking the same thing recently since I should reach emerald by the summer. WOuld increasing prices mean lower sales?

yeah that is the $1000 question

It MIGHT reduce prices somewhat, but i don't really think that much.  The images are so cheap people don't care if it is $1.00 or $3.00 - at least not most people.  As long as more than half the people are happy paying a little more, then you would make more money.

i guess i have time to think about it though - i have over a year to wait :(

But I do like that setup that members can earn more per file after X amount of sales.  I really like how dreamstime has that set up as well, on a per file basis.

I'll definitely double my prices when I get to emerald.  With ELs it doesn't seem to make any difference if you put the prices up.  Last week as a test I started putting some of my latest uploads  at 150$ for an EL and this morning I sold one so will put all the rest up to 150$ now. If people are willing to pay so much difference for an EL I'm sure that they won't quibble about a dollar or 2 for a normal DL.

But have you noticed that many of the big time sellers have thier EL prices set VERY VERY low????  I'm not sure why....I would think that setting the EL price at $25 is way too low, but maybe they sell 10 time more that way.....any thoughts?   I have mine at $100, and get a couple EL's every month....

Here's what Yuri has to say about it:

Or maybe they are too distracted to increase their prices, or don't know that they can (yeah right!)?

thanks for the link - case and point.

It is not surprising that fotolia is such a high earner for the big sellers.... if my fotolia income was doubled now, it would be my #1 site as well.

I only sell 3 or 4 a month but that is  more than last year when I had them set at 10$.  I Think it was only about 6 months ago that I realized that I could put them up.

good points on Fotolia EL prices.I think they should raise the minimum EL price to 50 for beginners 10 or 20 dollars way too low.
I usually set mine to 100 dollars for the time being.
as for emerald and  beyond,I have looooooooong way to go.

Leaf, when I Got to emmerald I set my whole portfolio at 2 credits and my sales went up about 60-70% in terms of cash, number of sales decrease a little but at the end it is worth it. I have exclusive images with fotolia set at 5 credits and they seem to sell almsot as much as when I had them set at 2. Can't wait to get to saphire and put my credits up again!

Maybe lisafx will chip in here.  I've just read a thread of hers elsewhere that said that when she doubled her prices the dls didn't decrease and she's making about double now.

that would be dandy if shutterstock had a sliding pay scale - more than 5cents.

How do you tell what level you're at again? I can't find it.

Yep, you are right. :)

I did put my prices up to two credits when I reached emerald and there did not appear to be a significant drop in DL's.  Maybe a very slight dip, but the double earnings more than compensated for it.

Fotolia jumped from 12% of my December earnings to 20% of February earnings. So I guess that is what, a 4% dip in downloads?  Not a big loss considering the huge gain.
