Title: Can you withdraw images after they sell?
Post by: K46 on May 20, 2018, 13:51
Hello!

I'm a new member, glad to be a part of this community! :)

Is it possible to delete a picture from a portfolio after you have made sales on it?

It's on of the reasons I'm thinking about licensing the best of the best solely through my website.

Thanks Sean!

Wouldn't that affect their existing uses of my image badly?

No, they can still use it under whatever use/s they paid for if RM; or almost unlimitedly, under RF.
In a very few circumstances, it might limit what you can sell it for in future.
Also, be aware that some agencies have the contractual right to sell further rights to exisiting customers, e.g. repeated RM uses, or extended RF uses (check your contracts)

It would have no effect on licenses you've already sold.  Those (RF) are perpetual.  Non-revokable.

As far as I know, you can delete the image, but you will not be able to forbid the buyer to use your photo, because he has already bought it.

The buyer buys a license to use the image

So I bought a picture for my blog article https://essaydragon.com/blog/attention-grabbers (https://essaydragon.com/blog/attention-grabbers). The author wanted to cancel the purchase, but I refused. The picture remained on my site.

As noted above, what you purchased was a license (I assume royalty free).

It's very unusual for a photographer to want to "cancel the purchase" - can you explain why someone who licenses their work would want to undo a license sale?

You would need to abide by the terms of the license (most prohibit you from re-licensing the image, for example) but otherwise you're OK to use the image.
