Hi all,
I just got this email (pasted below) supposedly from Getty images inviting me to be a video contributor. Have anyone else got that? Is this real? Also, anyone here contributes videos there? How sales are and how do they pay? On their website i can see that the videos (RF) are selling for a good price, but nothing about contributor commission. I also hope it's not a scheme making contributor paying for uploads. Any advice/experience are much appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Do you know what's the rate? With the high price it may be still worth it?

You can set your own prices on pond5, will Getty really be better? They want exclusive content and you can´t remove individual files if they don´t sell.

Ask them about the royalty rate,but I doubt it will be 50%.

The video market is just starting out. Pond5 has the largest library with 3.5 million files,but only 490 000 are model released. They also only have around 90 000 4k videos.

All other agencies have much less files. The video market is at a very,very early stage, absolutely no oversupply and nearly everything still missing (well,except for sunsets...)

Maybe some people who are selling on getty can give you an idea if they are happy and what the average return is.

Of course you can add Getty as a side income if you want to, just for diversification.

But overall, at this stage I would personally not be to keen on putting videos exclusively somewhere, it is simply too early IMO.

Or at least not the majority of the videos.

But good luck whatever you decide.

ETA: maybe it is possible to add files on a non exclusive basis? Might be worth asking if they are so keen on your content.

ETA2: you might want to check out the istock video forum to see how happy the exclusive videographers are. I think many people already have left and the income thread doesn´t sound too good. That is the other problem - will there be any growth or will your videos be stuck with a company that is going down?

I am happy with the money I am making on Getty, I have been Exclusive for years there.

Thank you all for your reply! Oops, i forgot about the exclusivity thing, if they only want exclusivity i just can not give them anything, but it is not mentioned anywhere in the video requirement so maybe i will just write to them and ask.

@jjneff : May i ask what is the average $ you get per sale there? And are you selling RM or RF ?

That's absolutely not correct. It's true that there's a much wider range of categories that are undersupplied when compared with photos. But there are easy to shoot, readily available, non-released categories that are definitely oversupplied. For example, considering how many fewer buyers there are for videos, how many "pouring coffee" (1716), "ocean waves" (89376) , or "mountain sunset" (19496) videos are needed?

My own portfolio (which is largely made up of those easy to shoot categories) has increased in size by about 20% this year. But my income is just barely going to be higher than last year. Worse, it's my older files that have continued to sell well. My newer files (added this year and last, which are technically, and I'd like to think aesthetically, superior) have not gained traction, and are languishing in the search results with all the 1000s of others.

Again, I'm not denying there are plenty of subjects that are poorly covered. Just that there are also a lot of subjects that are oversupplied, and that is going to get far worse next year.

The interesting shots are lifestyle with people, and with 490 000 files this is peanuts. It is basically an empty market. Think of all the different professions people can do,all the different meals around the world people cook,all the different health and fitness subjects...videos with one person,with families,with groups...

So from my perspective the market is completely open,also because in video you can supply many different angles and timing of a scene. You can shoot close up,far away,from above,from below,move the camera,keep it still,move the lights,change the focus etc...plus all the post processing options...There are millions and millions of clips you can shoot without ever duplicating anyone else.

And then there is editorial..how many different festivals does the world have etc...

I think even with 20 million videos you would still not have nearly enough to cover life on earth as it is happening today. And this is basically what you can cover with video.

So, I really see no problems at all, even if you still want to do "simple" there is still enough to do.

ETA: I am still uploading many shamefully simple clips, but they keep selling no matter how crazy I think it is.

I would go for Shutterstock (naturally) as they invest in sales and not just PR stunt like P5 to have the biggest library (with no quality).

No point storing our files without any effort to sell them!
I do know that Shutterstock has a massive sales operations and for that reason I would trust they will sell my files the best, as they do!

Explore Getty too, why not...they are the first stop for Ad Agencies purchases, so if you have high-end stuff, totally consider that.

I can say the same. Like you I also dropped being exclusive, then when I saw the sales in the "real world" I went back to being exclusive and have never looked back.
