Yeah, Varth, don't let that insecure prole SJLocke, hiding behind his silly pseudo and ashamed to show you his portfolio talk you down. What a plonker SJ is! I bet he hasn't got a shot that would pass Getty's Flickr inspection in his whole portfolio.
Ha!!!  Grin  Cheesy You're right, you're so right --  that SJLocke; what a poser!

I'm lost, what does the type or model of a camera have to do with anything?

Are we playing "mine is bigger than yours" game here?

 Roll Eyes

well actually you don't need the latest D4 or 1Dx to be a pro !

you can make fantastic images even with a small Fuji X-100 if that matters.
it's all up to you, how good you are, how quick you are, how many images you plan to produce in a day.

whenever i say i'm a photographer i'm overwhelmed by people talking endlessly about gear.
but, it's YOU making the photo, not your 8000$ nikon D4 !! but you see, go tell that to the crowd of amateurs and beginners.

last week i was touring in a SE asia famous town with a couple friends, there were hundreds if not thousands of tourists, and 99% of the
japanese had a Rebel or a D80/D90/D300 on their neck, girls as usual having a small Rebel, the ratio being maybe Canon 70% and Nikon 30% ..

anyone was shooting the same temple and guess what, at the end of the day i was there just for fun and having been there 3 times already i couldn't give a sh-it but without any effort i managed to produce maybe 30 or 40 saleable images.

how much $$$ will those japanese tourists make out of their snapshots ? ZERO.
and you know why ? because they're not photographers and therefore they don't "think" as a photographer, as simple as that !

being a photographer means being a visionary, not someone pressing a button !
but once again, go tell that to the huge crowd of gearheads buying a D4 to shoot pics of their girlfriend and their dog !

for the record i shoot with a D700 and a D90 and honestly i would need a third body with a sigma 8-16mm for wide-angles but that would mean 12kg on my neck + 3kg of tripod...

and you see, if i carried the sigma 8-16 i would have made at least a dozen more saleable shots so now i regret it but who cares it was fun with my friends and we drank beers all day.

^^^That's what I thought.  He pops up here with a new name every now and then.  It's a bit too aggressive for a genuine "new member".  Tempting to use the ignore button but then I'll miss all the fun Smiley

Well, maybe he got a model release from the tiger. Some people are very good with animals, you know. I honestly don't think the guy is a troll. Macrosaur never showed a single image and when he finally was outed, he never dared to show his face again.

Certainly !!!  I remember many people who started photography as their hobby with canon 500D and had been selling well.
Ny 350D pics still sell, long after I sold the camera - even the Getty sale in Dec was from the 350D.
My top seller on iStock is still the one taken on a compact digital.
The buyers don't seem to care.

+1 here :-)

it's a matter of principle, if you're serious about your job you will end up buying good and expensive lens and at the very least you will get a 7D instead of a Rebel...

i started as well with the cheapest stinky cameras i could get my hands on but i also lost tons of good shots because of that and now i regret it.
if you feel and you "know" you're good enough then you must invest some $$$ and buy the right tools for the job.
either that or you're wasting time.

you can't shoot in F1.4 with a Rebel + kit lens, you can't zoom to 300mm, you can't get tack-sharp images, you can't shoot by night without a tripod or a decent flash, and the list goes on.

if i'm quick and lucky i can make dozens of saleable images per day, an amateur with his Rebel can make 3 or 4.
at the end of the day i will sell my images for the cost of a 7D-body or the price of a decent lens, the amateur gets nothing apart rants and raves on Flickr or Facebook.

i would go even further : if you're cheap and you only "play" with images, just stick with the cheapest DSLR on the market, 18-55 kit lens, and have fun !
BUT, don't come here talking about making a living out of stock, you either "play" or you do it as a job, and if you do it as a job you need the tools of the trade and the right mindset.

You don't what you're talking about. 600D (Rebel) and 7D share the same sensor, their image quality is equal. There will be no difference in IQ whatsoever.

OTOH 7D has a better body and AF system, but if you shoot ppl and still life, it doesn't make any difference, since you can't shoot in low light anyway to give the better AF system a chance to shine. And most stock photographers (at least those that make a decent living out of it) shoot lifestyle.

You're just one of those ppl who feel better about themselves because of the things they own. But a supersports car won't extend your penis Wink

so again, can the pros that think the only collection is house collection please post your portfolios?
whip 'em out

Geez... you do sound a bit desperate.
But I agree with Sean. You gotta work for your fun.
I'm with Getty RM / RF in various house collections – but why should I point to my portfolio there? Just to show you what you need to get in? I got in just by doing my own thing. No need to peek at others.

If you REALLY want to see RM portfolios on Getty: enter a search term (searching only Stone), pick an image, click on it, click on the photographer's name. Bingo.
Happy now?
