Easy question hard decision to make. :/

Im gonna buy this week (as I have holiday discount) 5D mark III, but it is really hard for me to choose between these two lenses.

The thing is, I have money for both options, but with the new 24-70II im reaching the budget limit (camera, second flash, lens, grip). With which I dont feel so comfortable as if I buy the 105 with IS, I have like 1k$ to spare. But I will probably miss that 2.8 :/, got 70-200 2.8 and love it.

I saw all the videos etc. but I want to ask also here, as Im shooting a little bit of stock photos, but im gonna make lot more this year.

I know it is evergreen probably, but I will appreciate any advice. Thank you.

I went with the 24-105 and love it. OTH, I have the 70-200 f4. If you are used to the 2.8 on the 70-200 and use the extra stop, you should probably go ahead and spring for the 24-70. I would have had to wait another month to budget the 2.8, plus I wanted the extra reach.

I've done a few videos but don't have the experience yet to give advice on that part.

Thank you, well im used to that 2.8, but if i go for portraiture, i can go with the 70-200. For some super bokeh I can use 50/1.4 , so Im somehow convincing my self that f4 will be fine. Im glad I hear you love that 24-105, what I heard all videograhpers love this one. Some people are somehow sayin that with slightly bad light the 24-105 has focusing speed problems. Any notice from your one?

Haven't shot much low light as I've mostly done studio stuff since getting the new rig, but in testing, it seems to do fine.

Are you trying to make money or is your photography mainly a hobby? If it is the former then go with the 24-105 which will be more than good enough for 99.5% of shoots and is half the price. It also has IS which is probably more helpful to most photographers than the marginal difference in lens quality.

I have no idea why the new MkII 24-70 is so expensive. I've been using the MkI for over 7 years and it is absolutely fine. For the MkII to be worth twice as much it would need to be able to make the tea and clean up after the shoot too.

I have 24-105 but it's not so good for high quality images, after 70-80mm (until 105), the image quality isn't good. But I bought to make videos. It's a perfect walk-around lens also.

Haha  ;D love the comment, yea it is my part time job actually, but not the main source of income. So I guess you are right.  I saw also the old one is selling now for 1k$. This could be also option in the future.

Yeah this is what I thought, for these cases use the 70-200, which is great.

Thanks for comments.

It highly depends on the photos you take, but IMHO 17-40 f4, 50mm f1.4 and 100mm f2.8 are far the best pieces in studio...
Do you use the 70-200 for outdoor shoots? (I find too long the closest focusing distance)

That would be what I would buy __ or a used one if available. The MkI 24-70 was almost never for sale in used condition on Ebay. Once you've tried it why would you ever sell it?

I owned both at one time. I sold the 24-70.

I had a both the 24-105 and 24-70 mk1 and had mixed feelings about the 24-105.

Like icefront said, I found a lot of the images I took past the 60mm point were a bit soft. Even at F8.  24-60 was nice, sharp, and contrasty. The lens let me down enough that I picked up the 24-70. Great lens. Sharp at just about any length and aperture.

I'd also agree with the 17-40. Love this lens. Corners are soft but the center is as sharp as a prime. I got some fantastic pictures with it. Has never let me down.

What about the 28-300?

I use it outdoor, but also in studio, but as you said, the focusing distance is huge. I have smaller flat, so when I shoot with that in kitchen it is almost impossible :D I have in my scope that 100 macro L lense, and actually I can buy it for the money I save on the 24-105 :) cause as a kit lense to the 5D it is very good value for the money.

Anyway, thanks a lot guys. The order was sent :D
