Sending lots of prayers for Getty photographer Joe Raedle, his family, and all the other brave journalists and photojournalists covering the Middle East conflicts.

I'm sorry to see that.

I'm actually surprised there hasn't been more reaction to this story on here.  I mean, as a Getty photographer, Joe is literally one of our own, so I thought there would be more response.

There was a Brazilian journalist held hostage for a few days there, but he was released and is back home. One thing to consider is if the journalist or photographer is a citizen from an "enemy" country. There is risk enough for them to cover a conflict, even more if one of the sides may see them as true enemies (even if they may be against his government's actions).

I know that Schlumberger avoided having US employees in Colombia because they work in the jungle where the FARC dominate.

I hadn't heard that. Thanks for posting. I haven't been following the news lately other than knowing the problems there.
I admire those journalists who risk their lives so we know what is going on. They have the choice to go or stay and they choose to go. They are truly brave by putting their life on the line for what they are doing.

These situations are very, very sad, but I see no connection whatever between Getty and me, so it doesn't feel personal in any way (any more so than the rest of the news, which I keep up with and react to, but don't discuss here).

This might sound cold but He knew what the risk of going was. Even in "friendly" Saudi Arabia.. the possibility is high for an American to get grabbed and used as bait or video display.

Like those people who recently sailed into Somali waters and were captured / killed by the Pirates. They knew what could happen but decided to go anyways.

Those America / British Photo Journalist, I have to give it to them. They have bigger and brassier ones than I going in armed with only a camera. My Military background says bring weapons too.

Getty just announced that Gaddafi ordered the release of the Getty photographer and 2 AFP journalists.  Good news.   ;D

thought this was very interesting

Amazing that they endured all that because they were there to take pictures of what was happening. And awful what humans do to one another. Very, very hard to read, although I'm relieved that this group made it out in one piece.

A cousin of mine. He got back from that region not too long ago. Military with certain clearances and gets certain briefings. That's about as clear as I will get with it.

When I was in Berlin, My Unit dealt with sensitive security stuff. We had briefings and alerts that others did not know about.. even the others at the site we worked. Comes down to the old line of "Need to know". Just like I am sure we did not get told what others were getting briefed on because it did not deal with security. That stuff had us drawing down on some Brit. Soldiers on an Exercise because they did not inform us. Anyways.. there ya go.
