I just watched this clip about a motion art magazine cover and how they see the future
Living Magazine Cover and Spread - Outside Magazine

It obviously looks cool and it definitely seems the tech is willing to let it happen... BUT, are we just grasping meaninglessly onto old tech?  It is like that 'what the future will be like in the year 2000' video I posted a while back.  Where people send a fax on the beach - we have 'one upped' that with cell phones, sms, and emails.  Or where it shoes people zipping through a pay toll and swiping their card as they go through.  Sure we zip through but having to swipe a card - no way.

I think if magazines / movies and images are going to merge it isn't going to be in the 1900's tech of the paper magazine.  It is going to be on the Apple Tablet (when it comes out), ebook readers, iPhones, etc. etc. Why buy a paper copy when you can just buy the digital video copy?

Well, Leaf, maybe those things wil become so cheap in the future that they will be disposable.

But yes, I can imagine purchasing content for the new generation of displays, and not having just static images in the magazines, or books.  That's cool.

Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper for us to have a blank reusable electronic magazine template and download content to it?

I just don't see it happening.  A moving turnable page magazine.  Uh-uh.

Won't be long and kids will be asking, "What's a Magazine"  :) Paper products are not stabilizing at all and more are going out of print every month.

Vibe Magazine closes down after 16 years.
Time Inc. is closing high-tech magazine Business 2.0
Phrack, the underground hacker magazine, will publish its final issue at the end of this month, ending a 20-year run.
Gourmet, Cookie, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride: RIP October 2009

Interesting link to the latest who's not going to be around much longer.

Also this is related.

- The Los Angeles Times has killed its local news section.
- The Gannett newspaper chain has put its newspaper employees on mandatory five-day furloughs.
- The Detroit New and The Detroit Free Press have ceased daily home delivery.

These are all photo buyers!

I think newspapers will continue to decline, but magazines still seem to sell well.  Some close but I am sure there are more around now than a few years ago.  The newsagents are packed with them and I see people buying them all the time.  I much prefer reading a paper magazine to one online but I am sure that will change when they make a decent screen for reading and the magazines offer a cheap download subscription.

I may be old fashioned, but I like to read printed newspaper (even if I look for fresh news on the Internet) and I definitely don't change my printed subscription of National Geographic for its online version. I am not so attached to books, although I like to keep my favourites on my shelves (others I give after reading), and I would move to electronic versions once the technology is consolidated, with good reading conditions that won't hurt my eyesight.
