Title: Wemark
Post by: mj007 on May 21, 2018, 13:00
When dose Wemark start selling images. Seems like all the talk went dark ????

They were gathering images prior to actually opening.  If I remember right, they said they expected to go live in June.

I'd wait until July before wondering much about them.

I did go ahead and upload some images to give it a try, and those have not yet been reviewed.  Again, if I haven't heard from them by end of July, I'll contact them. Otherwise, stock is a long haul proposition. I don't worry about a week or two here and there...

Are you sure your ID was not verified?  Mine was, about 48 hours or so after I applied.

They have not yet verified my tax info, but they state very clearly that they will not do that until you have sufficient sales for a payout.  Since they are not yet selling to the public, that has obviously not happened yet.

I can easily see why they would do that. Why bother spending the time and effort to validate tax info on those people that will never sell enough to receive a payout. This way it spreads out the effort, as photogs reach that level over a period of months, and they simply never bother on those that never reach the threshold (many of which will have never uploaded images after having their ID verified)

In fact, if you uploaded images, then your ID WAS verified.  You were not able to upload until the ID was verified.

I am pretty sure you have simply not had the tax info verified. As I said above, that won't happen until you earn enough to receive a payout, as stated pretty clearly on the home page.

Three weeks later, I am still waiting for Id verification and photos evaluation. I have just sent an email, waiting for some details about the time it will take and the future market prices. Guess if I don't hear back, I will have to hit shift-click and delete all photos before we even start.

"We’re announcing an exciting change in our roadmap, releasing a more extensive and ambitious alpha version of the Wemark marketplace. It will result in a slight delay in launch, but one that comes for all the right reasons." why does the term "Exciting change" not fill me with anticipation? https://medium.com/wemark-stories/major-roadmap-update-4a35533e2888. Meanwhile my images sit in the queue (I presume).

I just watched the utube video. A lot of talk about their crypto currency but no defined info on how they will sell our images. I fell like I may have wasted my time uploading images to them. we will see.

Photochain has a better name.  The whitepaper is interesting but we will end up paying for hosting and probably not getting as much marketing as the current sites.  I'm still not convinced that enough buyers are going to use this yet, maybe in a few years.  Here's the whitepaper  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1C4UPA9-9o2cOLJOEYMIVwN_Fi3Ebtn2YcRua58hQ7_0/edit#

You can always tell how things are going when someone says "thats a great question" then appears to answer a different question. To a non crypto geek this is mostly incomprehensible. I see no reason why customers would buy from them.

i love to hear about 15%. Iam ready to start on Wemark and kick ass the 75% greedy Agencies  :-*

@Wemark
But how should i handle the EU-VAT if there is no middleman?

Maybe you payment will not be traceable as it is crypto currency. Then if you make no sales no worry about taxes.

There’s a middleman.  Wemark.  Beacause they host it and take a cut.  That equals middleman.

Not necessarily for the EU-Vat.
If the contract is direct between the seller and buyer i as the seller have to pay EU-vat for every EU-buyer in the buyers country.

If i sell via an agencie the angencie has to pay EU-Vat.

The differnce is that an agencie pay me. If i use a Marketplace i pay the Marketplace for there service.

So outside of a different method of handling payment transactions, how is this different than any other agency?

The administration costs.

Agency = I have to write one monthly bill for the agency payment and no VAT payments.

Marketplace = Many bills for every single sale and if a EU buyer the VAT payment in the buyers country.

I read the link to Medium Sean posted and found the content a strange, high-speed water slide built with buzzy phrases that didn't really tell me anything about what they were actually going to do, or when - or even what they had done, or problems encountered.

If you can't be clear about what you are or aren't doing, larding your statement with overused hype about how blockchain will address all manner of problems doesn't help - actively hurts if you have a mental alert that goes off when snake oil sales pitches (https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2013/08/26/215761377/a-history-of-snake-oil-salesmen) are detected.

I was surprised to see that LinkedIn says that Lee Torrens is an advisor to Wemark (Mar 2018 to present). Still listed as Marketplace Director at Canva...

That's simply because they don't know what they are going to do.....the Mr  Micawber of the Microstock world. By tying themselves to crypto their future is entirely out of their control.

Exactly. Back when this thread first started I mentioned the fact that to me their entire site felt more like a soft sell to photographers than a genuine attempt to establish a new agency. It's pretty obvious now what they were  up to; just another failed venture looking to exploit a large group of disgruntled creatives.

Bit harsh maybe I just think they made the classic mistake we've seen so often by focussing on the benefits to suppliers and not the customers who actually drive any business. Then trying to fund it with "the next big thing"

The risk of submitting stuff is/was fairly insignificant giving them hard earned cash for their magic beans is a completely different issue.

A very small sample of average images.  I don't regard the risk as any more significant than most Microsites out there with numerous odd/obscure  partnership deals. What's the risk? Someone will steal them from them  and sell a few copies? They can pay a few cents and download them from a microsite and do that.

Yes you can make your own judgement for your images perhaps I should have said "in my opinion".   What is the worst that could happen do you think?

From Wemark on facebook : Wemark :

Meet Jon Feinstein, Wemark's new Director of Content and Marketing strategy

Jon is a Seattle and New York City-based photographer, curator, writer, Shutterstock's 5th employee, and co-founder of Humble Arts Foundation, a non-profit championing emerging art photography. A strategic "Swiss Army knife" Jon's had his hands in nearly every angle of the photo world, spanning marketing, content creation and curation.

Jon spent more than a decade at Shutterstock, joining in 2005 and growing brand and marketing strategy from the ground up. In his early days, he built Shutterstock's first print advertising and events strategy, putting the company on the map for millions of readers across magazines like Communication Arts, HOW, PRINT, and Aperture, while negotiating substantial presence at conferences like South By Southwest and Cannes Lions. Over time, he grew to lead partnerships with advertising and creative organizations including Art Directors Club, CreativeMornings, D&AD, and TED, collaborating with teams across Shutterstock to develop thoughtful, engaging content with each partner. One of his proudest achievements was building a program connecting some of the world's most powerful speakers – including Serena Williams and Siri founder Tom Gruber – with access to stock imagery for their talks around the world.

In his spare time, Jon is an established photography curator and has collaborated with galleries and non-profits including the Filter Photo Festival, United Photo Industries, Hasted Kreutler Gallery, Glassbox Gallery, Spin Magazine, Milk Studios, and ArtBridge to name a few. His curatorial projects have been featured in Aperture, The New York Times, BBC, The New Yorker, Hyperallergic, Feature Shoot, and American Photo, and his writing has appeared in VICE, Photograph, TIME, Slate, GOOD, Daylight, and PDN. His own photography has been exhibited around the US, and has been featured in VICE, Booooooom, and Slate. He also teaches photography and visual literacy at Seattle's Photographic Center Northwest.

On a personal note, Jon just became a dad and is excited for all the crazy wonders that fatherhood has to offer.
