Yes, I had that thought a few times as the thread from the dead came back to life. One post and there are other first time posts, many with three and out, where they never come back.

As for the 40-D it's interesting because buying one used is less than repairing one with a bad shutter. (unless someone knows a place?) I have one here that's in perfect condition except the mirror/shutter unit is ERR99

Last in that series, 10-20-30-40-50 that uses the same BP-511 batteries and CF cards, is the 50-D which is just fine, doesn't do video. And with the aftermarket for $19 for anything new, almost makes that a non-issue. But with five chargers, adapters, a stack of still good batteries, a pocket full of CF cards... that helped me decide to buy a used 50-D.

The OP is still looking for a camera two years later?

However, if we're keeping this thread current for interested visitors, I'd recommend a used entry level canon 1000d and the the fantastic plastic 50mm 1.8 which if used within their limitations still provide plenty of scope for learning the craft on a budget and the opportunity of making some real folding money at the same time.

Not wrong, just that I would still argue that a used higher-level Canon (a 550D/T2i for example) will deliver more value for the buck.
