Just for the record, the new Canon MIII, has got a light-leek at the LCD, screwing up the metering system, it was confirmed in Korea, Japan and here in Sweden, two cases, and one here is actually a friend of mine, he changed it for a new copy but still the same problem.

I dont really know what this means and I dont care since Im waiting for the next Canon to be launched BUT, its food for thoughts before ordering one. :)

I assume you are talking about the 5D MIII. Can you point to any authoritative source on this (before Canon sue you for libel).

There is a major thread at the DPR forum, where many copies show this. OK!  so that forum is basically a joke but many people who have bought this new cam, will confirm it! however, weather it has an effect on picture quality or not, we dont know.

Its under the thread, containeing the 5D.  Im only forwarding the news here. I am not the one that discovered it.

happy easter

Thanks. I'm currently in Crete and Easter isn't till next week by which time I will be back in Qatar, successfully avoiding religious fervour and a hail of falling bulletsl

Well, as I already ordered and paid my mkIII, I initially did not like that news obviously.  But then I took my 5D mk2 and did the test they suggested at DPR.  It has the same "leak"!  I've been using that mk2 for a long time without any problem, so I suppose I can stop panicking now.

It might be worth knowing that repeating a libel is regarded in (English) law as being no different from inventing it. Or it was 20 years ago, when I was working on papers in the UK (and I doubt if it has changed).

Anyway, if the "flaw" is no worse than in the Mk2, I can go back to wondering how to get a MkIII double quick.

Paul!  after reading this at the DPR, well ofcourse its a concern!  I mean were photographers, arent we, we have to share, same as we shared the banding problem with the old D200,etc.

Personally I recon, its hardly anything to worry about, at worst a child thing.

No way any libel would stick here, not to the OP at the DPR or anybody else.

I mean, hell!  just look how many brand new cars are being called back after discovering major flaws.  This is just a cam, for gods sake and yes, just checked my MII, and it seems to be the same thing?

I dont know. I dont buy any camera gear until flaws are sorted out,  are you?

For all we know, it might be a Nikon troll,  farting about?

best.

Nah!  the M3, is the motorway from London up to Glasgow. Goes via the lakedistrict and up to Ben-Nevis, where they officially test all new DSLRs.

Nope that isn't the M3, but the M6 becoming the M74 when you hit Scotland (where I am at the moment). M3 is down south going from London to Southampton.

Except for the fact that you said that your friend had the problem with 2 different cameras ;)

Yeah but it might still be nothing?  since the same occurs on the MII and after what I have heard, with Nikon cams as well. I actually held in a MIII body after hearing this and frankly I cant see anything? I certainly did not see any light or whatever.

Best is to follow that thread on DPR,  they were the ones that discovered it.

After reading a bit, it appears that if you shoot with the lens cap on or no lens at all, (body cap on), high ISO, long exposure, and have the LCD light on at the same time, it has an effect on the meter, sometimes. People aren't sure yet if it effects the exposure, is an electronic issue or if there is light coming in from the LCD. Also one person found the same problem with the 5D Mark II which means, it's not a huge problem, or you would think someone might have noticed it sooner? Not that it excuses something being wrong, but it's not some major warning alert "major flaw" scare and not a "leek". (what now Canon has vegetables in the cameras?)  ;)  Some people tested and couldn't replicate the problem.

And about that M3 or MIII thing, it's a 5D not a M3.
speaking of leakers There's a 1DM3 and some others with more to come,.

If you do astro photography with your LCD light on, during exposures, this might be an issue.

Oh well, my mistake, that explains a whole bunch. Wasn't the cook on the Muppets Swedish too? LOL  :D

I think in Majorca a Porro (Italian = Leek and Spanish surname) is something they roll and pass around. Shows what happens when people smoke vegetables?

But of course! Used to live in Scotland, but now only go over a couple of times a year to see family (wife is Scottish) - back home in Sweden now though.

Have to say that travelling with with camera equipment is getting increasingly stressful - I don't like it one bit (but do understand) when you have to get all your cameras, lenses, laptops etc out of the bags and spread it together with the rest of your metallic valuables over several crates with loads of people about. That combined with no shoes, having had your belt removed and frantically trying to not drop your trousers whilst trying to control two kids (and a wife) ain't relaxing....puuh nice to be back home!

If this little annoyance is seen as a major flaw Canon definitely succeeded..

I haven't had that hassle in a couple of years: certainly not in February, flying out and in Glasgow - Heathrow - Colombo or November: Gla - Amsterdam - Florence. Guess I look 'mostly harmless'. In Amsterdam, someone asked to open my bag after the scan, but he just pointed it to to his pal, looking at me, looking at it and seeming to say - she doesn't look like she'd have a 'proper' camera.

I just got the message from my photo dealer that my 5DIII has arrived, and can be collected as from tomorrow.
Now the big question is :  SHOULD I collect it on a Friday 13th?  You can count on it that I trip over my own feet and drop it on the way out.  Or it might have the Major Flaw!  or worse, it might have 3 Major Flaws!

It was very thorough at Edinburgh airport going back. Even frisk searched my 4 year old son. Every piece of camera/electronics (cameras, lenses, flashes, battery packs), watches, wallet had to be x-rayed individually, as well as having to empty a bag full of whisky decanters! Obviously it is more stressful when travelling as a family of four trying to keep track of the kids and 6 pieces of hand luggage!

Most stressful thing is naturally that all these valuables are spread out on both sides of the x-ray machine with loads of random (and some proper dodgy looking) people around looking like they wouldn't hesitate a moment to get a bargain on a Canon MKII or a Breitling watch. And let's not forget that I was without shoes and belt, diverting a lot of my attention to not have my trousers ending up around my ankles, as well as comforting my son who didn't particularly like being frisk searched by a complete stranger. Anyway, it is the way it is now a days for a reason and I rather go through that than having some terrorist making it through security.
