Read this. I guess not and it was just a wording change?

And that is the point that Facebook and Instagram, and every other online service, want to make to the public: We cant do this for free, forever. You, dear User, whether by paying us directly or letting us resell your information to third parties since thats the most creative idea we have need to have some skin in the game. Our servers and software dont run for free. We have to pay our employees.

Its just the hard truth as it stands today of businesses on the Internet. Maybe someday hopefully more creative monetization strategies will bring about change.

But the adage, If youre not paying for the product, you are the product is not an opinion, it is the reality.

Ads and an IPO?

I had a sense that Instagram, when they backed off their original language change saying that it was taken wrong, were lying. Instagram, FB, Pinterest, and Google itself are our enemies in a long-term war against copyright. When we lose our rights, they make billions, and they know that very well. It is some of us who fail to understand it.

Ads and an IPO?

Yes, ads (before the IPO he was already a zillionaire), which are still on the site. We shouldn't have to give up copyrights just so they can boost their bottom line.

I didn't think for one NY minute that they were actually going to back down. They will just have their attorneys rearrange the weasel words to make us think they have changed their mind.

Nope instagram got caught out with a massive rights grab. They backed off and will try to get their way via some sneakier legal method - similar to the FB strategy.

They made billions in their IPO, and or sales, but now they need to use us as the product to sell to advertisers and marketers. Curiously enough some of us don't want to just give everything to them.

Then don't use their sites. The FB IPO is something of an illusion. You could equally argue that Zuckerberg has lost billions since it happened. They have no way of ever monetizing FB to justify anything like the price they are supposedly valued at. It may take years ... but eventually it will come out in the wash.

Anyway, like it or not, this is the 'information age'. It's not strictly true that you are the product btw, it's the information about you that is actually the product.

Actually, I can use the site the way I always have, to keep in touch with family and friends, and not upload photos, play games, click on ads, share and reshare things, or like anything that's clearly a company's attempt at gathering data, i.e. images that have hundreds of thousands of likes and comments. When it comes to the point where they MAKE me do that, I won't use their sites.

And this might be the information age, but I get to decide what information I give away.

This is the quote posted by the OP, from Instagram. They seem to think I am the product.  :)

The article is not from Instagram, it's a review of the situation.

If youre not paying for the product, you are the product

Has been the catch line of what's really going on at Facebook and the rest of the free social networking sites. We are the product. I'm not interested, but I will play there. I won't put anything useful of important there, ever.

Nope instagram got caught out with a massive rights grab. They backed off and will try to get their way via some sneakier legal method - similar to the FB strategy.

You didn't follow the link and read the article did you?

They already had the rights and were just changing the wording to make it more straight forward. So going back, they can still use us.

This Part: The old terms were roughly the same just less concise. They state that Instagram may display advertisements and promotions.on, about, or in conjunction with your (photos).

They also say You hereby grant to Instagram a royalty-free license to use the Content that you post subject to the Services Privacy Policy.

No I don't approve or like it. All the cheering about beating Instagram and Facebook, how the little people beat the big corporations... is an empty victory that didn't change anything.

Rearranged the weasel words good way to say it and going back nothing changes. Many of these witch hunts are fueled by mass hysteria and panic. Nothing changed except peoples who think they stopped a change.

Another viewpoint. What I find most humorous is this guy says, to beat Instagram use Flickr?  :o

But it covers some other territory about sites that use our public information and efforts to promote.

Twitter Filters, I never noticed.

Instagram loses its quarter of daily users

Over Christmas. How many daily users did you lose in Christmas week? What did you do to drive them away?

I suggest you ask the author of that article, no need to shoot the messenger. Did you read the article anyway?

Yes, I did, and I know it mentions it being an unstable time of year and Instagram's denial - but really it is silly to present Christmas week as having any relevance to anything.

And the messenger did add his own line under the link!

I very much doubt if more than a small minority of instagram users care what is done with their snaps, most of which will have no commercial value anyway.

Me too, now that should make them think about using us for advertising, without permission.

If you read down a little, the Max. any person can get is $10. I'm not sure it's worth filling out the forms.

Class actions, where the companies pay millions and the attorneys are the only ones who profit.
