Title: Do customers really care?
Post by: Tror on July 01, 2013, 14:15
Do customers and stock media buyers really care about anything?
I mean, I am from the old days and am under the impression that nowadays its like "Oh, I wanna make a website which brings money, so lets check for "business" > umm, thats looking good, I`ll take that".

They do not really seem to care if the image is stolen (Google images), if it is exclusive or not, if it fits to the color scheme of the site or layout, if it is used many times otherwise, if its released, if it is outstanding to the rest and most importantly: if it follows a unique design idea and the personality of the product.
Maybe I am just having a bad day, but I am strongly under the impression that nobody nowadays wants to create a really unique and special content anymore, its just about reaching most people and getting the most bang out of it....

The internet spiraled out of control and there is no education or other means to explain not everything on the internet is free. Its too little too late.

If they didn't care, then I'd never get any work.

So the internet has been under control before? - I totally missed that  ;)

The internet is the best thing since sliced bread. That you can now (also) see stuff made by people that don't care about visual design doesn't make it wrong. And I disagree with "there is no education or other means to explain not everything on the internet is free". While piracy is a problem for many, it is not the end of the world. When I read the news I get the impression there some risk involved for pirates getting caught. Some always learn the hard way  8)

it's a temporary phase of the market, sooner or later any market niche will be run by a few monopolies and everything will be pay-per-use.

not sure why you got a - for this, as I agree. (but perhaps it relates to my idea that you've upset someone before? I was tempted to + it to even it up but it would ruin my point)

+1 so many users have no clue that Google images aren't free. i've mentioned this before: the art teacher at my children's primary school actually teaches them how to search and download images, and she thinks they are free to use. this problem isn't going to go away.

I think google itself is a huge part of the problem. IMHO they simply try to take advantage of other peoples content. I was shocked last week to find so many "full movies" and "full albums" on youtube. And they do nothing against it.

Ron: I made your minus go away ;-)

I have a tendency to upset people by things I write, probably because what I say is always rubbing someone the wrong way. No matter how intelligent or dumb or true or false my comment is.

For education use, they are free to use them, certainly in the UK. The problem is weaning them off expecting all images to be free when they leave school and are using images for other purposes.

Here is what you get if you try to send a DMCA to Google

"IMPORTANT: If you knowingly misrepresent that material or activity is infringing, you may be subject to liability for damages. Accordingly, if you are not sure whether material available online infringes your copyright, we suggest that you first contact a lawyer. Please also note that your message to us may be forwarded to the party who filed the original copyright complaint. "

A warning that you can be sued if you try to protect your work, and that the person, often criminals in the case of people running warez sites, who stole it will be given your contact details. Until recently it had a specific example of a case where someone had lost a case and had to pay out hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Here is what you get in a tiny font, grey on grey, when you are presented with an image on Google image search.

"Images may be subject to copyright"

No warnings there of what may happen if you use the images, I wonder why?  ???

Just don`t worry. As SLocke said in another thread, don`t take things on the net too personal. Sometimes this forum can be quite rough too, maybe due to all the frustration in the industry atm....

Some do some don't.  I do business with one corp that want's to see receipts to make sure that all images used in marketing material have been legitimately purchased or produced.

On the other hand I do contract work with one of the largest companies in the world and their marketing department condones and even encourages its own marketing employees to find images for corp marketing material through google images. The good news is that last I heard they were being sued. Lets hope that news is going to be spread through all of the global offices and the practice will change.

It starts with us, everything trickles down.

The films shouldn't be there (apart from the ones you pay to watch), but the music (individual songs/albums) seem to be OK to upload by users who don't have the rights to do so, some labels seem to be OK with it, some aren't. It can act as advertising for the artists/labels and you get adverts on videos and some of that goes to labels/youtube/whoever.

You admit to writing dumb things that are false and wonder why people get upset. Might be your attacks at people. Then you want to be burying the hatchet all should forgive you. Might be better to stop wiritng mean posts at people with false information. Be nice and everybody will be nice back. You reap what you sew. GALATIANS 6: 7-9 (KJV)

Often it is the language used that upsets people. Most folks are not professional writers and often choose a word or phrase that has loaded meanings.  For example if I wrote "you claim to say..." it is very different than "you say..." and "you don't have a clue..." is far different than "are you sure of that information?..."

If you were conversing face to face you have the benefit of facial expressions and body language to mold the language in ways impossible when using just the written word.  The use of emoticons  :-\  attempt to replace that personal interaction.

Plus: English might not be the mother language of most participants in this forum, as is the case for me as well. Misunderstandings are prone to happen therefore...
