Hi,

Just wondering if any of you host your own website to sell your photos?
In case you do, i'm wondering:
-what software do you use? (written your own, bought or freeware?)
-what payment system do you use? (and what are the costs?)
-what pricing model do you use? (same as the prof. sites? $1,$2)
-do you do anything on marketing?
-etc...

In case you sell on the big 5 as well, how much do you sell private compared to eg. istock/shutter/fotolia/etc...

And looking forward to a link ;-)

Thanks for sharing,
Bjorn
ps: i'm relative new, and did some searches but couldn't find any on this subject, so if there where previous discussions please drop me a link.

I have just started testing out selling my own images on a website which i bought and then did a ton of changes to it.  I bought it from ktools. (with a little shameless referral link there)

I would recommend it with reservations.. it works ok, but it isn't very pretty and is only geared towards subscription downloads.  I have redone the look of it, and made it credit based.. perhaps I will post a link to my site once I get it finished.

There was one member on the forums here that made his own site from scratch (nruboc).. it looked pretty good as well.. and was found here http://www.snappystock.com

I don't have any sales on my site yet, but it has only been up a couple weeks and i am still working out bugs, not sure what nruboc sales are like.

I'm interested in building my own web as well, my main concern is to get a search engine that can extract from my database the pictures wiith the keywords typed by the user, is it possible to buy a simple search engine somewhere? thanks for any info..jean

well if you want something to use as a base simpletools isn't too bad.

Their code is well documented so it is pretty easy to change.
It is written in php and uses a mysql database.

Hi Leaf,

Thanks for the info!
If i may ask, what pricing model do you use? Royalty free/right managed/etc?
And roughly what price? somwhere around $1,$2, $3 on size or more?

bjorn

I don't do stock online, but I do have a photo site, http://cpix.co.nz (That is I don't sell stock on the site, I do have microstock on four conventional sites...)

I sell prints to sports teams etc (the sports and events link) from events I cover.  Hence the reason the rest of the site is a little light on info..  One of those "round toit" things to get more general info on there..

I wrote my own, and have some scripts using imagemagik that create the thumbs etc.

There's lots of different ways to do this...  Be interesting to follow how you go, as I've considered doing stock on the site a few times, but always fallen asleep thinking about it. :-).

Chellyar - if you are at featurepics, they provide a script ("HTML snippets" on left hand menu) where your photos are linked on your sites (ie, your photosa t FP are on your site and provide links for peoploe to buy at FP).  Everyone who clicks though would be a referral and I assume if they click through, they are intersted in buying so would probably buy too.  That would be a simple middle ground.
