Hello,

For those interested I have stared my youtube channel. I have been living on stock video for 9 years now and want to try my hand at something new. I have a Winner & Loser series "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r19J4kHCYik&t=43s" weekly plus a lot of tips on how I survive as a stock video artist. Would love if you are interested to subscribe :-)  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwoU327B927MD49NNf16gxw/videos?view_as=subscriber

Interesting! It sounds like everything you recommend applies to stills as well. How do you compare shooting stock stills vs. video in terms of effort, cost, and return?

Video is definitely harder to get right but if you are good in photo you can pick up video as well. Just like any new skill it takes a little elbow grease

Hey John, congrats! Informative and nicely done!
Seems like starting YouTube channels is some kind of a trend now, cause I started mine today :) In similar manner I tried to figure out how much money one can realistically make in this industry: https://youtu.be/YuBLhfuxDdo
Anyways, best wishes with your channel, subscribed! :)

Cool stuff. I've been following your channel since you started it. It's always interesting to see someone else's perspective on the stock footage industry.

I somehow missed your first announcement here. Glad the thread continued, as it came into my RSS feed again.  I liked it quite a bit, and have subscribed.

And I must admit I expected you would say that mountain top run was a winner.  Surprised to hear it was a loser.

I have a question.

Since you are a very productive video producer, this somewhat deviation to YouTube worries me a bit - does it mean that you are seeking a new direction? Like you and others said, it takes a lot of energy and efforts to make a good YouTube video. Your clips will have to be watched for over 4000 hours and by 1000 subscribers in order to be entitled to make advertising money. I could be wrong with these numbers, correct me if I am wrong.

Well, I haven't sold anything from SS for 1.5 months, which is a bit unusual. No sales from P5 in January.

I hope it's just because of the holidays and not a trend.

Advertising is only one of many options if a goal is to monetize one's channel. There are many options and ways to go. Working on referrals, selling products directly, also sites like https://www.patreon.com/ become more and more popular, etc. I believe it really depends on content and target audience, as generic banner advertising could work with only very big viewership.

Great questions! And no need to be worried I started the channel as a way to challenge myself to produce better stock on my own. I also know that to be successful on any platform you have to provide value so that is what I am trying to do. I would also like to build a large community where I can have a voice and fight for the artist! The only way to get attention from the big players is to have have something of value that people like. I don't plan on stopping producing stock anytime soon! Youtube may or may not offer any financial benefit to me time will tell. I also have a passion for business and enjoy photography so really it is just another creative outlet for me.

Interesting channel. Not manychannels or people  on stock footage on Youtube, so good luck, and make many videos! hope you to post useful info and insights. If I may comment on Patreon, it might not be indicated for stock contributors as long as you already sell your work, plus that pledjes on patreon mean free stuff for patrons. Then you will have either start making private videos either giving away footage?. Youtube is oversaturated and pays little for most channels as a perweonal comment I would never count ad revenue or patreon or affiliate links as a side income nowadays.... :)

Thanks for the kind words, not doing this for money now as I know to count on YT would not be wise! I am trying to build a community a big one for stock/video/Photo and business. I have a passion for all three so that is what my channel is about posted at the top. The idea of winner or loser series since I have been at this for years is what stated me on deciding to go forward with this channel. Thanks for your advice and support!

PS, In the future I do plan to use the Live SuperChat feature to answer questions on my stock career.

fantastic @jjneff, I like it.

I have seen your many good posts on here in so many forums we apparently followed together over the years, and it's great you've moved into that YouTube thing, too. Very good content I can see over there, I subscribed immediately and will be back for more (also can see you have a really good Subscriber number there already after such a brief period of time)!

This will likely also be a great way of promoting your stock (and other) video production...

Good job.
