Hey crowd,
I need to make a decision and i need your HELP. I got a chance to buy a used (all of them in an excellent condition) camera from a friend.

I can choose (different prices, but price is not an issue right now - please leave that aside) between:

EOS 1D Mark 2
EOS 1Ds Mark2
EOS 7D

I would love to use the chosen camera for microstock but also for shooting sports.

But mostly for microstock.

I have a 30d at the moment - so i guess every camera would be an upgrade!?!

Please HELP ME!

Regards
Martin

Several years ago, the EOS 1Ds Mark2, was considered the dream camera for shooting microstock, especially for Istock. It gave the highest resolution, so you could qualify for pay outs in the XXLarge category. I bought one, back then, and am extremely happy with it.
The only drawback, is that I shoot at f.16 a lot, and have to spend a lot of time retouching out the dust spots, on the sensor. It's just part of my workflow. The newer cameras supposedly handle this better, but I haven't tested them personally.

Noise should be quite a bit less on the 1Ds Mark II or 1D mark II than on the 7D.

If you want it for serious sports nothing beats the 1D mark II for shutter and focus speed.  The 1Ds focus is also great for things like tracking but you can't get many shots off / second if that is important.

If the 5D mark II was in that line up I would suggest that, but between the 7D and the 1Ds it is a hard choice when you factor in the price.  I might be tempted to go with the 7D because of the newer sensor and ease of carrying it around.  Canon have really done well in improving noise.

7D
pros
light
light and cheap(er) batteries
small
video
newest processor
cons
1.6x crop factor (could also be a plus if you want zoom, but since you want it mostly for microstock it is a negative)
lower resolution than 1Ds

1Ds Mark II
pros
better focusing
larger files
full frame
1D series body (heavy duty)
cons
heavy
expensive
big

the 5D is essentially the best of both worlds...
but whatever you do remember that the camera is pretty temporary in the digital age.  Only buy what you can easily afford, it is going to be worth half as much in a year or two and you are going to want / need an upgrade.  Spend your money on good glass and get the camera you can afford - and plan on upgrading in the near future.

EOS 1D Mark 2 - Sports 8MP/8fps/1.3

EOS 1Ds Mark2 - Studio, Landscapes, Stock 16mp/4fps/full frame

EOS 7D - a little of each very well, does video too 18MP/8fps/1.6

Like others, if the goal is sports, 1DMKII for focus speed, durability, weather sealing and image quality. If you want the best picture quality, you will give up some burst and focus speed 1DS. The 7D is not the same as the 1D models, however it's kind of between a 50D 1.6 crop and a 1D 1.3 crop for speed and image quality. 7D has dual digic 4 processors, latest technology for focus and exposure control.

Personally I consider the 5D and the 1Ds to be in a different category of camera where neither was designed for fast focus, high frame rates, or outdoor maneuvering. I'm of the opinion that these are both best suited for studio work or tripod mounted scenic and urban shots. They are full frame cameras, which is very nice. Not your sports model.

In any case, whichever you decide, one model will not do everything best. That's where you need to decide what you want to do with the tool, that suits it's features. I suspect that whatever you decide you'll be happy. They are all fine pieces of equipment.
