Photoshelter just announced some pretty significant changes.

Now even basic accounts will have the custom website functionality with less PS branding.

And they fixed a few SEO issues that I brought up before including a different URL structure, image-level sitemaps, and automated sitemap submission. If they implemented these changes correctly so they're Google-friendly there's potential for good traffic.

I have a few hundred images I was going to submit to agencies but am now considering using PS to test direct sales.

So we're back to the direct sales question. Is anybody having any success selling direct?

If you have a PS account here's more detail http://www.photoshelter.com/mem/home/help/tut/index/june2010
We're just about to wrap up a major site upgrade, and you're getting some special treatment.
On June 10, 2010 all PhotoShelter Basic and Starter members will get a single customizable photography website -- our new Maui theme. Like the 9 themes available to PhotoShelter's Standard & Pro Accounts, you will have full control to display image galleries, select image sizes, add logos, and so much more. You'll have a complete standalone photography website perfectly suited to grow your business, outfitted with all of PhotoShelter's powerful tools for marketing, e-commerce, and client management. With this change, we will be removing the legacy PhotoShelter-branded display pages, in favor of your new website theme. (So, starting June 10 your visitors will experience your new look, and your brand will lead instead of PhotoShelter's.)

We'll also be announcing a series of additional upgrades. We're saving the juicy details, but these include:
Simplified website setup, customization, and management
Structural changes to help search engines find more of your images
Shorter URL structure that places your branding ahead of PhotoShelter
Simpler image gallery management with a streamlined user interface

Will they still charge the 50.-U$ e-commerce setup fee for basic accounts?

I dunno. Maybe ask them on their forum?
