Title: Panorama and 360 scenic
Post by: RacePhoto on March 08, 2012, 01:29
Anyone doing anything with this or is it like 3D. Pretty and novel but little market?

No answers may be a great indication of the answer. Zero = No Market ?

Mine aren't big sellers but some do quite well.  Not tried 360 for microstock, just a few frames joined using autopano pro.  I enjoy doing them and have been doing more lately.  Some people have more success, like most other forms of photography, if you stick at it, you can get a decent amount of sales.

We have a few, some of which sell OK to pretty well. But the - generally huge file size, the time involved to stitch and edit, makes it too costly to be worth the effort for microstock, IMO.

I've created several panoramas on a commission base for clients (for quicktime interactive movies, or to be printed on wall paper for large walls, including a few 360 x 180 degrees 2 Terapixel interiors) which I found to be much more profitable. Recently, the requests for extremely large panoramic images - even product shots - seems to be increasing, so I do believe there is a market for it.

I've made a few panoramas recently but haven't gotten around to submitting them.  Some of them are 8-10 images stitched together giving files of 50-80 Mpx, sometimes more.  Of course I'll have to downsize for submission, but the thought of having those large images downloaded for 25c on some sites dampened my enthusiasm.  Now you've got me curious as to whether they will sell so will try to submit a few during the next week or two and will see what happens...

While I was typing it looks like corepics just summed it up - may not be worth the effort.

Wow and thanks. Haven't done a real 360 except inside a drum 360, nothing spherical or polar.

Oh by the way, yes I have some panoramas on Alamy, one sold RF for $200/$120 I mostly put it up for fun, never thought it would sell. I'd have to count my RF there and possible not run out of fingers and toes. So big Surprise!

Have to agree about the time and size and micro, that's why I had it up on Alamy, but one sale of one panorama photo in three years, I'm not calling it a good market or success.

I guess I was fishing for a site that takes these and sells them. I vaguely remember someplace that specialized in panoramas for sale. I watched it and lost interest. It looked like one of those, full of nice images and hard work, no buyers, type deals. Maybe that's changed, I should make better notes?

I also thought maybe I had missed something, but so far it's about 5 for 5, no real interest in 360 panorama, Stock images.

But I'm 100% in agreement, I have autopano pro and it's sure entertaining! I have one hanging on the wall here at the office and I hardly ever print anything, or hang it. Bridge over the White River Arkansas, had someone drop me in the middle (no pedestrian walkway) I shot for 10-15 minutes, got picked up again.

This one is a stitch too: Starved Rock State Park, Ottawa, IL. Beautiful hike if you live near there. (free) Wear old shoes that you don't care if they get full of mud. Some nice trails, some river beds. If it rained recently, mud. This one is an easy hour in, but secluded and pretty. Big hill climb coming out. It's not a race?

SS stats: Waterfall Stock Photos, Illustrations, and Vector Art = 53,987 (I never uploaded it there either) Alamy: 115,306

Goes under labor of love shots.

I worked for a few years providing 360° imagery to Real Estate Agencies.  That is were the biggest demand for this type of photography can be found, although, like everything in the digital world, as more and more people learn the workflow the price drops to being uninteresting.

Good example of a 360/180° from a friend of mine:

But now, If I have to stitch 2-3 images together I just use Photoshop, which is not bad for simple stitching.

A lot of people use:         http://www.ptgui.com/ (http://www.ptgui.com/)

Perhaps I should refine my previous post a bit. we do sell stiched images, using 2 to 5 images as well. Most commonly, we shoot such images on location, when the intended composition is wider than the lens used allows. Those images, however, take little time in post production.

In my previous post, I was referring to stitches of 50 to 200+ images (usingPTGui as well). Good fun to create, if you don't need to use the computer for a day or two.

Race - if you happen to remember the site that sells extremely large panoramic images, please let me know, will you?

Etien - those are some impressive examples! FWIW: I made the pano on the wall (http://www.dewolfimages.com/uitgelicht/restaurant-dijkers/) of the restaurant, and this one (http://www.corepics.com/phoenix-panorama/)

Very well done!  And nice idea to use table for the down shot.  When I was into Panos I also used Realviz for stitching.  Expensive program but very good . .

Corepics

I am not really involved with this type of photography any longer, but a good friend is still engaged . . . . . .  if you want to network with him check out some of his work:

There's no market for panoramas, move along...  ;)

Actually, I'm working on a panorama masterclass ebook / site / app whatever so I may have something to help you out in due course.

i do a number of panoramas, and they sell as well as other travel &  nature shots - almost all are stitched.  the automatic panoramas are limited in height - often only 1000.  i usually take 3-5 verticals for a panorama

I do a fair number of panoramas for fun, and if they look decent I usually keyword, downsize, and upload. I did get 3 ELs on SS of panoramas one day - that probably doubled my return on all of them though. It certainly wouldn't be worth it for most pics, but since I like to do them for myself, it isn't much extra work to send them to Alamy and the micros. Before Alamy lowered the size from 48 to 24 most of my port there was stitched panos - with no sales.

The preview photos for panoramas probably doesn't help with sales.  Some of the ones on alamy make it hard to see what the subject is.  It's annoying when you think the photo looks great but the preview image makes it look horrible.  A big panorama doesn't fit in to the proportions of the normal thumbnails and preview images.

After all these years, it's surprising that the sites haven't come up with a better solution.

Thanks all (again) I use Autopano Pro I'm really happy with it. I think you can use CS or Gimp or a whole bunch of others, which all seem to work pretty well.

Yes I do it more for fun than anything else. Nice to shoot pit lane or in the paddock. When I'm taking pictures I sometimes just like to snap off a panorama for the fun of it.

That's what made me ask in the first place. I thought maybe there was a site selling panoramas as a niche market. (yes there was one, but weak eyes and weak mind, it's been at least a year.)

Might have been thinking of this one. Whatever it was, I never joined.  http://www.worldpanoramastock.com/photographer_signup.php (http://www.worldpanoramastock.com/photographer_signup.php)

Yes the previews on every site I've seen, makes them small, fit to the width of the tiny square.

Old backup computer is good for stitching. Start it with 45 photos from a DSLR and come back in a couple of hours to see how it looks.  ;D

That looks like an interesting site - has anybody tried it?  Does it get any sales?
