I noticed that istock seems to allow public domain images in unmodified form. Maybe I'm wrong but it looks like it to me. Just do a search for "Engraved Image" and you will see lots of images of old engravings. That's the first time I have seen something like that. So far I have only known of the Nasa images that have to be part of a design.

Are you referring to the Hulton archives? I might be mistaken, and I don't feel like looking for the thread, but I believe that Getty purchased the rights to these images and that they are not considered public domain.

I'm confident that someone will correct me if I'm wrong, and offer a relevant source. :)

Here is an example of what the original poster is referring to:

Not part of the Hulton archives, as far as I can see. How would that work? If an image is public domain, anyone can use it. I have a feeling an exclusive can upload and sell it, but you will notice in the above photographers description, she mentions it is part of public domain. That way, the buyer knows it is not an exclusive image, merely being sold by an exclusive.

I suppose that means that there could be the same image in someone else's portfolio? It will be interesting to hear how that works.

There are many examples like the one above. And there are tons of old engravings around, hmmm. I remember reading something a while back that Shutterstock started to crack down on public domain image use.

I saw the same thing and went and asked about it on the IS Forum a while ago.

Of course the thread got locked and the forum moderator was rude to me even though he was in the wrong.  There are many files that are public domain on wikimedia that are oddly similar to files on IS.
