Hi I was recently reading the threat about Fine Art America and wanted to start a new thread about the topic of selling photo prints online.  I'm only about a year into selling stock footage and less than a year into selling stock photos, but the last few months I've been selling quite a few photos daily, and wonder how much money I'm missing out on by not offering a physical print.  At this point I don't have time to do the printing myself, so I have researched a few sites that handle all that like: Fotomoto, Smugmug, Snapfish, Shutterfly, and FineArtAmerica.  Not sure if any of them are worth the time, but I would love to hear some feedback from the more experienced people in this forum.  The only thing I did come up with is that they all take a pretty big commission for their services.  I would also like to know if anyone has integrated these printing services into their website.

The difference between a stock site and a POD.   One is for commercial usage.  The other for home use.

Stock sites have customers who purchase large volumes of images.  They do the markeing and take a big cut.

On POD, you are expected to bring in your own customers.  You get a bigger cut but have to work harder.

The first, and biggest, question is: do you have the means to market yourself, or would you be relying on the POD site itself, and/or search engines, for whatever sales you might get?  If the latter, then I'd say FAA is unfortunately, despite its serious problems and limitations,  the only game in town.

FAA lets you set your own markup, and some people actually go there looking for wall art.   I don't think both of those statements are true for any of the others.
