What do they mean by "We respect all kinds of artists and show our love by licensing the images we use", yet their Stock images are all watermarked?

From their submit page...

"A couple things: Were being good citizens and licensing the images were using. If you submit, pick a relatively inexpensive image (in iStock Photo terms, keep it between 2-5 credits) and well cover the licensing fee. Youll make our lives easier by including the URL to the original image. Also, please leave the watermark on the original stock photo and place the stock photo on the left. Thanks!"

If they actually buy could be tested easy. Take one of your own shots that might get no attention in sales... redo it poorly, submit it to them and see if you get a sale.

I'm not sure if they are lying or just using the watermarked version to show which image is the stock one and where they go it from

It is!

They should have called it "micromock"

I like this one:

What I find interesting is that some of them are better than the originals.

I found one of my images.  This image had a sale one day before it was posted in that site.  It could be just  a coincidence, or maybe they actually bought a license.  Anyway, since these images are being also posted in other blogs, maybe it's better they have a watermark.

I agree and since it's parody, I'm not sure they have to buy a license? The concept and style of the re-shoots is perfectly legal for humor. It's a way to build traffic if nothing else. Just like some places that write totally outrageous things, so people will link to "that site that freakin dumb", all the people linking to that site that's copying stock photos and making fun of them is... driving traffic if nothing else.

No one will be doing any of my shots, there are no people in them!   :)

Also just learned what planking, owling, teapotting or cone-ing are. This all will pass except for people who still want to quote Star Trek, Monty Python or famous movie lines for the rest of their lives.  ???

Oh funny, had me honestly LOL the girl with the Twixt bar mimicking the piece of chocolate and some are honestly funnier than the originals.

Interesting point about parody being a 'fair use' and noted the point above about a sale having been made, also that they're being copied all over the web, so better to be watermarked. But I'm not sure about 'driving traffic' to the stock sites, as I can't find a link to the stock site, though I might have missed them.

If this is humor, then so is the "crappy stock photo" sites that have come before it that we all yelled about.  I think if they're using our content to gain traffic, they should license it correctly.

Not driving traffic to the stock sites, driving traffic to THEIR sites. I think sjlocke  has a perfectly valid point anything that uses any image, watermarked or not for gain or benefit, should be licensed. Not necessarily that it must be licensed, legally? They might claim it's editorial? But I was trying to point out that copying the image, setup, clothes, pose, whatever else, is not protect because of parody allowances.

I dare any of them to copy one of my images, it just doesn't work. Nothing funny, just dumb stuff and things and isolations. I'd have to do something interesting and creative and have a human in it, before there's any chance or getting Stocked. I'll confess, I have one photo with a model release and a human in it, and it's not myself posing or mugging. I think it has zero sales. Well it seemed like a good idea at the time?

I bet they wouldn't try the 'editorial' argument with Getty.
But yes, Fair use would allow parody.
Are Sean and I the only ones that don't think that site is remotely funny? I've seen several references to it round the web, and they all think it's funny. I just don't get it.
But People of Walmart - that's funny, if awful.

Could be. I certainly think 'Stocking is the new Planking' is funny. (As it happens I don't think PeopleofWalmart is funny at all. That's just kindergarden sniggering.)

It's not a particularly new idea anyway. People have been doing parodies of iconic images and footage for decades. Just take a stroll down Abbey Road in London for example and you won't need to wait long to observe yet another bunch of tourists thinking they're The Beatles.

I agree with Gostwyck here - I also find the Stocking/Planking funny - I can easily imagine doing something like that when I was younger and getting a huge laugh out of it as the models try to capture the poses and expressions.   It's also a whole new way for people to celebrate and enjoy our work - and that's kind of nice :)

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, someone said once.  That's pretty much how I see it.

The Walmart one I find a bit cruel - and that's not really my humour.

+1

And virtually every blog out there nowadays has ads on it, meaning they are making money off of it one way or another. The agreements I accepted at the agencies all say that if my image is being used on a website, it requires a license. Period.

Let me clarify my position. 3D images that need glasses will last longer than Stocking and believe me, 3D is just a passing fad like Quad sound. Yeah cool, interesting and amusing, but spit on the griddle. Planking was even less interesting except for a small group, owling less interesting and the only reason we notice stocking is because of being involved. The rest of the world is even less interested!

People of Walmart is amusing and keep in mind, you may have sympathy or sadness, or consider it cruel to point out the absurd attire, but They Did It To Themselves and went out in public. Someone didn't stage these or pose the people. If you cover your body in Tats and fall face first into a fishing tackle box, then dress like a leopard in undersized spandex... you can expect that people will find it odd an humorous!

Same reason people watch Britney Spears or what's her face Hilton. Because their freaks! Oh it's OK because they are celebrity freaks, addicts and sometimes psychopaths?

What are we supposed to do, pretend it doesn't exist and divert our eyes, for fear of being politically incorrect? Speaking of which (or is it Witch) did anyone see the new loony-tune contender who says, "a hurricane and quake were God's warning to Washington". Hey wait, does God really care about those creeps in Washington? Now you want something that equals people of Walmart on a daily basis, just watch the politicians and politics, not just the USA, the UK is pretty funny as well. We only have two viable parties here, the UK has so many, I can't keep count anymore. What has it done for any of us?

They need the NT to start charging a toll for people to cross the street and have their picture taken. Anything that's fun and people want to do, needs to be taxed or billed. That includes walking around Stonehenge, which is nothing but an underwhelming bunch of big stones. Go to Avebury or Steness or some of the other big sites and you can walk right in. What's the difference? The stupid modern day "Druids" and publicity.

Planking, Stocking? Gone by the New Year except the same people who still play with hula hoops, Yo-Yo's and do haki sack.

I dont need to go to the People of Wal Mart site to see that stuff. I swear half of the shots must have been taken in my current city Wal Mart. Be thankful those web shots dont come with smell-o-vision.
