Even though they may be doing a job they love, most people will hate (or, at least, actively dislike) some part of it.

What do you hate about selling your photographs through the microstocks?

Note: I am only referring to things you do as a photographer. That's why there isn't, for example, an option for 'Getting rejections'.

Everyone has 2 votes - for those who hate more than one bit of it  Shocked .

No.

Because it is not something you do as part of your work selling through microstocks (I'm assuming you are a photographer who does that, of course).

That's a very good idea Bateleur. But I can't say what I like or dislike the most.  I like a little more uploading than others I think. But it depend where.

I like taking pictures outside but I hate the studio. I like finding good keywords because english is not my first language and then I discover many synonyms that I wasn't know. But I hate finding the irrevelent keywords for each pics of a series

Bizarre but I hate uploading the pictures to my computer and post processing depend on how I think the picture will sell or not. I hate loosing my time, so I don't upload many that I don't think that will sell multiple times.

I don't record things, just give me the money if there's some.

So I'm lost

What I hate most is putting a lot of work into post-processing (only to see it rejected).   Does that count?  Cheesy

Sorry Bateluer, just goofing. But seriously,  I think that is what ticks me most.  Doing all that work and sometimes, it is tedious work.  Example: I just sent up  3 pix of a hydroelectric dam.  There was a power company name in a large sign that was mixed in with the hundreds of power lines and towers. TON of work painting it out....   only to have all 3 shot down.  What a colossal waste of time. But, that's the biz.

So...  post processing when it turns out to be fruitless.  Cool=tom

Ah-ha! Trying to sneak in a 'I hate rejections? are you?   Wink  Gotcha!

Yeah, you can add all sorts of qualifiers ... "I hate taking photos when I've got the white balance on the wrong setting".  Grin

We're dealing with broad areas here.

I hate keywording (even though I'm also a writer). Sends me to sleep. And I don't much like filing and record-keeping. I'm not a bookkeeper.

I really hate keywording.
I wish when microstock started a few years back, that it had stared with the sites doing the keywording.
We would all take it for granted by now that they did it for us.
We would still have a good old moan, and we would have even more to post about on here.

One thing you didn't mention, I hate putting images into categories.
We are supplying the goods for sale, the sites should be setting up the displays and deciding where to put the goods.

I didn't put in categorizing images as a separate choice as I felt that was all part of uploading. What's more, it varies from site to site. Some have complicated systems - which are so annoying because they're usually incomplete. There's just no category for the photo you're working on. Bigstock is one of the worst with that. Others don't require categories at all.

I also didn't include disambiguating as a separate choice because that's unique to iStock. (Is it? I don't know of any other agency that requires it.) I felt that it was also under 'Uploading'.

Tell you what .... I've added another choice 'Other things' and maybe, if people choose it, they can say what their 'other' is in a post.

I really really really really dislike categorizing the images after they've been uploaded. Every site is different and none of them seem to have really mastered the concept of "drill down".  It seems that so many images fall into more categories than categories allowed or there just is not a proper category for the image at all. And many of the category names are more obfuscating than helpful. I think this is one area where sites could use improvement.

I ticked "keywording" and "other things" but have just realized that it's which parts of your work you hate doing, not things to do with the business in general! It put an end to my rant before I had a chance to even start.

I don't like the keywording. English is not my native language, so very often I'm sitting with a dictionair.
Also post-processing is not my favourite, but that's more because I still have to learn a lot of photoshop

Postprocessing is tedious.  I just spend way too much time on each photo.  Keywording puts me to sleep. Smiley

I just realized that I hate the categories the most! Every site has a different layout and choices. Drives me bananas!  Cry

I checked "other" because it's the lack of standardization that I find frustrating.

Categories are a big one - I'm not even sure they matter, but if they do, it'd be nice to have something standard across sites and supported by Photoshop so these things could live with the image instead of being site specific.

Keywording is an issue because what you can and can't put varies from site to site. It's not just iStock's disambiguation issues with the CV, but which sites support multi-word keywords, which sites do stemming (especially plurals) automatically and which don't. If you omit plurals, you get hosed at sites like DT which don't automatically find the singular form if a buyer types in the plural as a search term, but if you include them, you get error messages from SS which handles that and strips plurals.

Microstock>Complaints>Subject>Emotions>Intense>Distaste>Hatred:

Categories! Followed closely by categories. Next is categories. Then a whole bunch of categories. And finally, ending with categories.

Since Categories weren't an option, I selected Uploading, as categories selection is usually around the same time as uploading.  One site in particular makes categories>selection>painful.

Too bad there's not an option for "keyword editing after the photo is accepted."  That's one I would have looked at and seriously considered clicking.
