I have this great dilemma : in july, I will be going on holidays for a week or max 10 days.  I usually know right away which country I like to go to.  The last three years I went to Wales, Scotland and France (Aquitaine).
This year I haven't a clue.  So my question is :  with regard to stock photography, what would the best place, country or city be for a visit?
Just to limit things : it should be in Europe (read : affordable for me), and please don't say Belgium, as I live there.
I'm not asking for the nicest places in Europe.  I'm just curious what would be the best selling subject / city / region, as I love photography where ever I go.  And what would be wiser : country side, coastal regions or cities?

Don't go to Switzerland!   :o   I live there!

No, seriously, there's lots of opportunities here, but so many of them have been done to death already.

How about the West coast of Ireland? That's pretty photogenic, with photogenic people, too. Or, on the other side, some of the countries of Eastern Europe. I've never been there, but I guess Romania could be moody and photogenic.

Europe in July must be so crowded...  I have plans to go to the Baltic countries next, hopefully in May.  Interesting architecture (though you Europeans may be tired of it) and some landscape.  Italy is definitely my favourite (it's in my blood, hehehe), Spain is great of its architecture and artwork.  I still have to do a hiking tour in Europe, and I was told that France, Switzerland and Austria are great for that.  I did some good hiking in Iceland, but tell me about an expensive place!

Regards,
Adelaide

I say Croatia or Greece if you like coast at summer. Im from Croatia and if you are not planning to stick to only one place ,   I can recommend to come here. Disadvantages of Croatia , well , night life is not so strong , and the places are crowded especially at end of July when half of Italy comes here.

Advantages , well its not expensive , the places are full of monuments dating from roman empire, there are lots of old small Mediterranean cities with lots of traditional architecture etc.

If I was in your shoes and if I could afford it , and if I have few people to go with I would rent a sailboat and a skipper and go for 7 days sailing on Adriatic , from Dubrovnik ( a must see place )  to Pula. There are no storms , there are small ports everywhere and for 3 or more persons its not expensive at all. Your camera should have a lot of work to do.

Greece would definitely be on my list if it were not July (too hot).
Austria and Switzerland I have visited a lot when I was a kid, and these are beautiful countries, but do mountains sell ?  The same for Italy : so many people have been to that great country, so aren't stock companies flooded with Tuscan scenics and Italian art?

When looking at your portfolio (and skipping all images done in your studio), what sells best?   The great scenics, the famous places or architecture ?

An idea in Italy can be Islands Eolie (Vulcano, Stromboli, Lipari,...). It's true that you find everywhere photos from Tuscany and italian architecture of Florence, Rome and Venice (for me better season in great part of Italy is spring and not summer), but these islands can be interesting for a photographer, and they are less common.
You can go near to Sicily and its greek temples. It's only an idea, but why not? It's hot in july, that's true...but it is interesting.

I have always liked LaRochelle, on the eastern coast of France. It has nice architecture, with ancient arcaded streets in parts of the city, that is cool in summer and gives lots of nice arches, in which to frame photo's.

Lots of wine regions around there too. Nice rugged coast.

Another suggestion is Honfluer, in northern France, very beautiful and old, lots of cameo shots available.

Yes I agree Italy:-
Tuscany and italian architecture of Florence, Rome and Venice, Pompeii ancient city submerged by volcano 2000 years ago and resurface again, Colmar Topicale stunning view and used to film Star Wars....vineyards etc etc, ancient civilisation...the list goes on... ;D

Thanks for the tips, I'll go and google surf a few days on Honfleur and Southern Italy.  Honfleur can be reached in just a few hours from my home, which is a plus of course.  I'll keep Ireland as a back-up, cause I've never been there and it always sounded tempting (but never found some one to join me because of the rain).

Hey ... yes ... Sicily! There's a fascinating and very photogenic old town called Erici, on the very top of a high hill, at the western side of the island. Amazing place, very 'historical' and little-known outside Italy.

Only don't go there in the high season. Though it may not be well known outside Italy, the Italians know about it all right!

Chicago, Illinois (USA)
Huge business city. If you want good business related photographs of skyscrapers, architecture, and people. This is the place to go.

Yea, it's not in Europe its just the city I want to go to the most so I figured I would pass it on to you.
