I have taken a look through previous threads, and also done some google searching, but I still can't find a clear answer (that I can understand!).

I am just starting to add footage to my portfolio, shooting on my D800. At this stage I am not really interested in getting too fancy with After Effects etc, so was just hoping to use Adobe Media Encoder CS5 that I have to process my clips as needed. Primarily, just to remove the audio.

My D800 produces 1080p files with  MOV extension right out of camera. If I inspect the file in Quicktime, it shows these stats:

H.264, 1,920 x 1,080
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz

Now Adobe Media Encoder has two output options for me H.264 and FLV/F4V. I chose H.264 as that is what the file already is, chose the highest quality broadcast settings and exported the file. However, it exports it with a .mp4 extension, not a .MOV extension.

From what I read on SS and Pond5, they want .MOV, or PhotoJPG

Thus my question (finally) - How can I export my clips using Adobe Media Encoder CS5 to a format that the stock sites will approve? Will .mp4 be rejected? Is there a better way of going about this? Is there a way of exporting that doesn't use compression, just removes audio? (seems thats what the sites say they want, no compression)

Thanks all in advance for your help.

Another hour of Googling led me to find this brilliant piece of information...

I was having the same issue and I basically stumbled upon this fix. Find the file named AddExporterList.txt located at

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Media Encoder CS6\txt (win) or /Applications/Adobe Media Encoder CS6/Adobe Media Encoder CS6.app/Contents/Resources/txt/AddExporterList.txt (mac)

Save an original copy somewhere else. Copy/Paste or delete as necessary to make the new file look like this:

# MediaCore Plugins

# AME Plugins

AudioWriter
WinMediaWriter

# AME Plugin Formats

MPEG4
H.264 Blu-ray

Hit save and restart AME. Voila! It worked for me and hopefully it will work for you.

This added a WHOLE BUNCH of codecs to AME, and I now have quicktime and photojpg and a bunch of others. It seems that if you install the CS Master Suite, then you get these codecs displaying. If you install a smaller quite, the codecs are still there but not displayed. Tricky stuff Adobe.

Anyway, if anyone has still got some tips for me for ideal settings etc for export I would be happy to hear them. Still much to learn - Aspect square pixels or 1.5? And so on...

Just so glad i got it to work!

The other thing you could have done was to download MPEG Streamclip which is free and will convert all sorts of movie files into photo jpg or whatever. You could put the files straight out of your camera through it...it will also get rid of audio and trim clips I believe....very handy and very good bit of software.

I'm using, the one you already mentioned, quicktimes MOV with the PhotoJPEG codec. Never ever had any issues with stock agencies, including mid- and macro- ones.

I just started doing video too and this is what I used - free and very easy.

While you folks are going over this, what's the best single format/codec for the major agencies, so I don't have to make a different version for each of them?

PhotoJPEG? MOV files?

Yes photo jpeg seems to have become the unofficial stock video standard.
