Hi guys,

I'm trying to improve my skills on color correction.

Here you have an aerial shot done with a Phantom 3 pro in the French Alps.

What do you think about it ? Please be honest don't hesitate.

Thanks  ;)

I think you kill details in highlights.

Thanks Demich,

Just noticed it specially in the clouds in the foreground.

I will check that point.

:)

Yes, you definitely overdid it.

Keeping details in the highlights is usually something that separates a professional looking shot from a consumer/cheap looking shot. UNLESS, there is a person talking against a very bright background - then it would be OK. But here, the subject is the landscape. That's one of the main things that makes an expensive camera look expensive - the dynamic range/highlight roll-off in challenging situations.

Since you have more details in the original shot, it will be an easy fix.

If you want to get picky I would mask out the clouds/upper part and apply different grading there for a more professional looking shot.

Hello increasingdifficulty,

Thank you very much for your feedback. I will definitely keep this in mind for the future.

Anything i can improve somewhere else ? For example in the colors.

I think you managed to remove the magenta tint quite well.

It's also a bit hard to compare on a split screen like that (unless you mirror one side) - it's much easier if you can see the whole shot. We don't know if the left side is blown out in the original for example. I do see a bit of banding in the sky, which could just be YouTube compression, too much contrast, or both.

Another little trick that makes something look professionally graded is that shadows and highlights are usually much less saturated than the midtones, so you need something that can split the saturation into three bands.

My first impression was "impressive work... but it looks a bit purple" and then I realised that the one on the right is the original footage! Keep the colour changes... reduce the contrast by about 50%. Maybe a touch more. Bob's your uncle.

The good one is the right part, yes?

In the left part there is too much contrast and no detail in the highlights

Hello Guys,

Thank you again for your feedbacks! They are very useful for me.

@increasingdifficulty can the saturation of the of the shadows and highlights be managed in Premiere Pro ?

@SpaceStockFootage, @Chichikov the left version is the graded one :) I will try to play with contrast then. Regarding the highlight their are burned in the some part of the clouds in the original footage already.

When seeing the video i'm still not really satisfied by the result. I looks like i have some haze (fog) and that shot is not popping a lot. What do you think ?

 :)

Looks a little weird, but not far off either.  Maybe you don't need to use log and just shoot with what you see is what you get approach.  Unless shooting in RAW, compressed vides images don't have much range for post color correction.  Therefore, it's better to shoot with color you want in final product.

Thanks for your comment helloitsme.

Shooting logs gives me the possibility of also send the log file for sale. This can be interesting for clients who wants to do the grading on their side.

Learn how to interpret the various chroma and luma wavefroms and vectorscopes. You'd be able to see how you blew out the whites without even looking at the final render.

This is a very difficult shot:
You are shooting against full sun (no clouds) over snow probably not too far from midday! You are really asking a lot to the poor sensor and lens of the P3.
When I had the regular Phantom 4 I would not even think about shooting anything south (even remotely against the sun) and certainly only in the last couple of hours before sunset or after sunrise.
Even with the P4Pro, which is in another league, I would not shoot against the sun in the middle of the day (let alone in snowy conditions).
As other have said, the post production has too much contrast and saturation and also a strong blue cast
