IN uk paid between nothing and 60 hr. I found you got what you paid for and with studio hire the economics didn't really work out for me. :'(

regardless of where i shoot, the terms can be TFP or 30 -100 /hr

the catch here is that models for commercial work do not necessarily sell well for microstock.
the thing being sometimes the models are too pretty for microstock.
i find the TFP works better as they are more "ordinary" looking for lifestyle
and more suitable for stock photography.

i think it was Yuri, Dolgachov or Lise (one of the big sellers) who once said the same thing, that not so glamourous is better for lifestyle shoot, as you don't want Demi Moore or Sharon Stone to pose as a CEO, even though Demi did play a CEO once !!!

I find this a big problem not because of the beauty factor but because it seems to be impossible to find commercial models here over 30 and difficult to find ones over 25. So I'd rather go with TFP friends etc instead of trying to pass off 20 year olds as doctors lawyers, CEOs, etc.

What about local amateur actors? There must be some specific social network for them in Taiwan.

Yes, I have used actors for some shoots. So far they have all been TFP or trading for a headshot session. I plan to use them more often in the future as even if paying them, the rates are far lower than models. I do location sound and mixing for some film projects, so I do get to network quite a bit there.

I think shooting celebrity doubles might worth a try in some stock occasions :)

Definitely. I don't meet many of those, but I did meet a Liam Neeson lookalike last week who should have loads of possibilities.

Do you approach modeling agencies to find models for your microstock shoots? Ive found very difficult to explain the stock photography concept to them. And when I do, and talk about the model release in the terms that stock agencies request, I always get absurd price quotes to get me a novice model for the photoshoot (last time it was around 1500 usd for 4 hours). Whats your experience with this?

Nope Purestorm, Model Mayhem etc is the place to go. You have to do a bit of checking with refs on there as there are a lot of inexperienced/naive models on there so you might get no-shows etc. but much cheaper

Well... It looks like I have to organize tours for stock photographers to Russia since you can hire really A LOT models from fashionbank.ru for example (mostly amateur but professional as well) for $50 - 100 for several hour shoot :)

LOL, modelmayhem??? you're kidding, it may have been true in 2005 or so when they were starting out. these days, it's filled with porn and scam artists. even had a known rapist which MM did not report .
in fact, a lot of the original models and photographers have closed their accounts for this reason.
it is now filled with GWC organizing shoots with their pals from porn sites to attract other GWC.
not the MM that once was.

i would say, stay out. .. not unless you want your daughter to be stalked.

I've had pretty good luck with Model Mayhem, but then I live in Los Angeles and there's a bazillion models and actors here. Almost every model/actor I've used was found on Model Mayhem.

My biggest issue has been the occasional model flaking on a shoot.

Use your friends-pay them in beer!

Actually, I like this method, you'll often get something you otherwise wouldn't.  For example, I asked grandma nicely if she'd make lemon bars for a stock video project, she was happy to!  Don't think I'd find that actor or set otherwise.  Friends and family will be more comfortable and have more fun working with you than hired help, too.

Started out paying nothing but time for pictures.  In the good times I was paying up to $150/shoot.  Now back to paying nothing (TFP) again.

I pay model USD 36/hr if I've used them before and am happy with them.. USD 30 /hour if it is the first time I use them.  Shoots are always 3-4 hours.

I generally just use people I've met or see on the street, find on facebook or are a friend of a friend.

I'm amazed at the idea that you have successfully met someone on the street and convinced them you were a photographer and not an axe murderer.

Tyler, do you pay the same in Sask vs Norway?  I expect wage expectations are much higher where you are than in a small town like Swift?  That said, it is definitely worth paying a good model well and continuing the relationship.

Well, Norway is quite different from the US.  ;D

I use Model Mayhem a lot.  It works well for the most part although I get a number of no-shows and last minute cancellations.  Generally I plan to do three shoots on the same day and expect at least one no-show.

For normal commercial work I pay $75 for a two-hour shoot, sometimes less for models with no or limited experience.  I do some fine art nudes that I typically pay $200-$300 for two hours depending on experience.

I also try to get people I meet in public and offer TF.  That works sometimes but cancellation/no-show percentage is probably 75%.

Some people swear by Craig's List but I've had no luck that way.
