Topic: Inspection times for video

(Read 2143 times)

Hello,

I am submitting video to IS at the moment. As you may also know it's really really slow there, inspection times can be around 8 to 10 weeks (non-ex) and 4 to 6 weeks (ex). Sometimes videos can get stuck somewhere and lost forever.

I am wondering how is the inspection process in other sites. Especially Shutterstock and Pond5. If you have opinion about other video submitting sites feel free to add.

Regards
J.

ShutterStock is up to about a week now... Ever since IS pulled this last stunt, review times have slowed down as I suspect many artists fed up with IS are uploading to SS.

Pond5 fluctuates between 3 to 5 weeks.  They got very behind, started to catch up, had a server crash and are now a month behind again.

If you shoot editorial, both Pond5 and SS have procedures for getting faster reviews on timely news-worthy clips.

Ditto on that, dnavarrojr. That's my experience as well.

I found istock a waste of time for video.  Uploading was really hard.  They have FTP but the rules are strange and when they cut my commission to 15%, I lost motivation to upload.  Pond5 is an easy FTP upload.  Reviews take several weeks at the moment but why does that matter?  SS takes about a week but they sell much less, I would rather wait longer and make more money.

Just a small update to my original post. At the moment the inspection times for exclusives is around 10 weeks on IS. For non-exs it's around 14-15 weeks I think.

This is not going in a good direction. I guess I will reconsider my exclusivity with IS next year.

This is my first day as a video independent. I am uploading to ss and pond5. Will add feedback here as soon as my files are approved.

Shutterstock just accepted my first 10 videos in ONE HOUR! I am stunned, really! All these files have been in the istock queue for ages, most of them still are (since September)

Thank you!

i've had similar experience - 1-3 wks for pond5, with most accepted; SS is a few days, but more demanding - eg, they suggested i use a tripod for a long sequence following a group of skiers in the alps!

My studio tripod is very heavy...but I´ll keep that in mind for ss.

At the moment they are accepting my files faster than I can shoot them! No rejections so far. But I can only see my portfolio in one or two days, right?

Woooowwww.. That's fast. Too fast. Smiley

I will wait until IS mirrors the videos on Getty and until I see the results. After that I guess I will make a decision. But yes, inspection times on IS is irritating and on other sites attracting. Smiley

My first files are now visible:

http://footage.shutterstock.com/gallery-66216.html

My friends are joking that my files got accepted so fast because there is hardly any movement in the clips ;-). And yes, I still need to find the WB balance edit button in my software.

However I am grateful that the seasonal files are online and maybe can still find a buyer before xmas.

Fast inspections is one thing, but of course sales is the other. But at least now there is a chance. It is so much more fun to shoot if you see your work go live. Much better than being told to cull down a series to bring down the queue. SS makes it clear they want to do business with me.

I have a studio stand from Cambo and use an orbiculight for lighting, so stability and professional light is not an issue.

And I will learn about what the buyers want, I just need to have a few hundred files online to understand them.

Nice work! I like the rotation on jewelry. I think you had similar clips on IS as well. Can I ask you how you did that? I guess there is something rotating underneath?

I don't have any editing software beside MPEG Streamclip. Therefore I try to arrange and fix the WB in my camera before the shooting. Maybe After Effects or Premium/Final Cut can do this job afterwards as well.

My orbiculight has a built in motor and turntables in different size. But there must be other solutions.

I did the wb in camera but later played with color corrections a little too much.

A lot to learn....

By the way istock told me with one of my rejections that they have too many clips of rotating xmas stock. I presume this extends to other rotating objects as well. It is true that it doesn´t sell much on istock and their focus seems to be characterstock. So I don´t know if it doesn´t sell on istock, if it will sell on sites with less buyer traffic. We will see.

My first 300 files will be testclips anyway.

I just uploaded 21 files to clipdealer in 90 minutes! I guess uploading to a server in Germany is faster than transferring overseas.

Does anyobody have any experience with them? They had a stand at the microstockexpo, seems to be a small team based in Munich.

Congrats! Your lighting is very good. that's a big hurdle for many still photographers transitioning to video- you can't make it much better in post.
One of the things I had to learn when moving to video is that motion is the most important element. When the motion is very subtle, the buyer can just use a still shot , which because of the much larger size than needed, can be motion tracked in after effects. You have to look at the situations for an interesting motion. Not so easy, I've found. Smiley
SS is selling pretty well for me, and hopefully the new pricing will increase payouts. Pond5 also sells well. IS has been dropping, but there are still steady sales. You just have to allow 3 months for the video to get on line. Pitiful.

That whole motion thing is hard to learn. Especially camera movements. Too many of my clips are made in "theatre" modus, i.e. the camera standing still and just observing the scene.

I think it will take me at least 18 months to get to a decent level. I might also take a few classes, to improve my work. But video is great fun, I am enjoying it immensly. I think I will love it more than photography.

you might want to post in the video forum about that. Even by IS standards that's too long. there have been issues with files being lost. There is a running thread you can read through and post to:

Congratulations!! I have so far 3 downloads in IS despite being exclusive.

Characterstock means more conceptual shots I guess?

Characterstock = People shots, working with actors

So, the fastest turnaround time seems to be clipdealer, they usually accept my clips overnight or in a few hours. SS seems to have a 48 hour turnaround, on pond5 everything is still in the queue, clipcanvas got their first batch today, let´s see how long it takes.

No other sales yet and I obviously cannot see what is happening on istock.

I am still uploading to istock as well, but I suppose now it will take 5 months before the files go on sale.

Clipdealer, clipcanvas and Ss don´t show download numbers, which will make them my first "go to agencies" unless any of the others sell significantly better.

Keeping my sales numbers private is extremely important to me. I learned my lessons with the copycats.

I must say the uploading interface is extremely easy on all the other sites. I really don´t understand why istock never invested in improving their system.

Poor Saga begins
not reviewed since 20/04/2011

finally I posted it to their "slow" lock thread forum and also to they wannabe support.
-------------------

Hi
Well any of my logic explode in my head. I submit 7 video/footage from 20/04/2011 to 29/04/2011, and they are not reviewed jet???
Hope that you can figure it up that today is end of first month of year 2012. because I dont know when you will somehow answer to me.
What da hell you are doing?! (As I see nothing). How can anybody do any kind of business with this kind of totally ignorance from you side?
9 months to review 7 short movie files?! what

This message I send to you let say "support" but Im concerned for any helpfull kind of answer in another month/s period so I post it here. Maybe someone more serviceable will hear it faster and solve my problem.

Problem name is. PLS Dignify yourself and review my 7 footages which are 9 months on pending list.

http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=340279&page=1
(I share this link above how all you can see in which speed this link will be locked or removed in they unwillingly basket)
---------------------------
As you see my 7 footage files are now on 9 month pending list for review on this incapable but grredy site, files have 1 to 2 views in my post but without any acceptance or rejections?!

It is very sad for site who claims few years ago that have 60-70% market share in MicroStock video business.
For now it is only pieces of dust...
