I'm sure this is difficult for all travel videographers. I could keep up when it was HD files but with 4K it's hard to stay up to date.

I have found KL and Singapore to be good places for fast uploading. Now I'm in Hong Kong for the first time with a substantial amount of 4K to upload. So far the speeds I've encountered aren't great. Anyone have any suggestions? I understand if this is a closely guarded secret as it seems to be one of the more challenging aspects of the job.

Yeah, it's usually pretty hard.

I have always focused 99% on having fun, filming, exploring and coming up with new ideas and saving uploading/editing for when I get back to the rain with not much to do other than sit in front of the computer.

I haven't traveled for longer than 2 months at a time lately though. I realize it would be a different situation if I was gone for 6 months or so.

The uploading I do focus on is backing up the best clips, unedited straight from camera, so I'm not completely screwed if I lose my drives.

There's a cafe on the roof of the Maritime Museum (pier 8, one along from the Star Ferry) on Hong Kong side.

Surprisingly fast internet access. Plus it's very nice to sit out on the roof as there's a good view of the skyscrapers of HK island. (Although the weather isn't great at the moment.)

If you really need to get them up quickly you could consider raising your compression a bit to lower file size. H.264 rather than prores, or prores lt. photo jpeg at 80% maybe. Not sure if would effect rejections or not.

Other low hanging fruit that probably goes without saying is upload overnight with ftp.

Thanks, I'll certainly look into this, sounds promising. I also appreciate the other replies too. FTP files while sleeping may be is obvious but still good advice. My first hotel has such slow uploading I gave up. Found a cafe with fast internet but don't want to spend too much time in a cafe. So I guess the real question is how can you make sure your budget hotel has super fast internet before booking. I'd suggest it's pot luck and just to book for a couple of days. Move if it's slow and hope the next one is better. In KL and Singapore I found and stick to budget accommodation with fast internet I know of.

Maybe uploading when you get back home?

Maybe uploading when you get back home?

New Zealand is way too slow for that.

I found the solution. My first hotel was a dud but the second had very fast wifi, as did my third and final super budget hotel. By default any Hong Kong accommodation should have very quick internet but it's not something you can know until you check in. Therefore until you get to know a goto hotel for subsequent visits, it's just trial and error. After 10 days and round the clock uploading, I got all my work done.

How many GB of files were you trying to upload?

How many GB of files were you trying to upload?

Probably close to 2TB, which would take a year to upload on my NZ connection
