Why does IS put that horrendous gradient over every image ( on my phone )?

Presumably because like SS, FT and others reported in image sleuth from time to time, they don't want to pay the premium on inspectors' time to do an extensive reverse image search on each submitted image. Or to pay for the technology to make it near-instantaneous. Bear in mind that suppliers are only a necessary inconvenience.

Indeed you would think it would be very easy to search for duplicate images these days. In the end it doesn't really cost them  as they don't bear the cost. In a fairer world we would be suing them for negligence.
