Topic: Use as book cover legal without an extended license?

I just did an image search on one of my vector illustrations, and I found it was being used as a book cover for some Spanish book. This image sold a number of times on various stocksites, but wasn't downloaded with an extended license. I'm not really sure if that is permitted?

I think it just depends on the print run. Check the terms for each site, but I don't think book covers are a special case in any other way.

It might depend on the terms of the agency you sold it from, but certainly on iStock you have to have a 500,000 print run before an EL is necessary (I've found at least four book covers, not an EL among them and I don't expect any of the books to have anything like a 1/2 million print run).

I probably sold it from IS or SS.

But okay, thanks! It didn't look like this book exceeded the 500.000 prints either.

To put these numbers in perspective, I offer this quote from Publishers Weekly:
Quote
“Here’s the reality of the book industry: in 2004, 950,000 titles out of the 1.2 million tracked by Nielsen Bookscan sold fewer than 99 copies.  Another 200,000 sold fewer than 1,000 copies.  Only 25,000 sold more than 5,000 copies.  The average book in America sells about 500 copies” (Publishers Weekly, July 17, 2006).
