Title: Anyone receive a subscription sale (@ 0.25) yet?
Post by: GeoPappas on February 28, 2007, 14:43
As the subject states, have anyone received a subscription sale (@ 0.25) yet?

I'm interested to see how many of them there are at this point.

Ok. This is what I found today in my earning overview:
03/01/2007 10:47 Member download Level 1 subscription $0.50 maximum (RF)

It seems like maximum res pictures still get you 0.50 from subscription not the 0.25 we all feared.

I had a subscription download for an "additional format" today.  My take, as an exclusive, was 60 cents.

I'm not feeling too good about selling a RAW file for 60 cents.

I also got one today, and of course....the biggest size DT offers. Why of course, who can refuse a free lunch?

"I'm not feeling too good about selling a RAW file for 60 cents."
ooooooooo, that's gotta hurt! RAW!? Your selling your RAW!? Oh dear Lord....Please save this man from the Devil

The misunderstanding I had was what exactly a subscription sale is.  I didn't understand that a subscription sale would be the same thing as subscription credits.

This means that rather than getting $25.00 (50 credits x 50 cents) for an extended license, a buyer gets an extended license for $10.00 (50 credits x 20 cents).

I will be pulling my RAW files before the weekend and I am going to have to think long and hard about offering extended licenses.

If a person buys a subscription, the contributor (seller) gets 20 cents per credit.  If they don't buy a subscription, the contributor (seller) gets 50 cents per credit.

Additional Formats are 4 credits - that's a 60 cent commission for subscription sales of additional formats. (based on my experience).

Extended licenses are 50 credits - that's a $10 commission for subscription sales of extended licenses.

Under the normal scheme (non subscription sale), an additional format would yield a $2 commission and an extended license would yield a $25 commission.

Where are you getting this from?

That is not my understanding of the process in place.

Subscriptions are either 0.25 for non-exclusive or 0.30 for exclusive.

You are exclusive.  So you should have gotten a 0.30 sale, but your sale was for a RAW file.

My guess is that with RAW type files the royalty is double, so it would be either 0.50 for non-exclusive or 0.60 for exclusive.

Extended Licenses should always have a $50 royalty.  They have nothing to do with subscription sales.
Title: Re: Anyone receive a subscription sale (@ 0.25) yet?
Post by: eendicott on March 02, 2007, 08:46
That is not the case.  As an exclusive, usually a RAW file sale would yield $2.40 (4 credits x 50 cents plus the exclusive bonus).  I just looked closer and I have a RAW sale on a level 1 image that occurred on December 13 for that amount.  My exclusive sale from yesterday yielded 60 cents TOTAL.  If the commission is 25 cents for subscription sales, then they must have dropped the price on additional formats to 2 credits plus the exclusive bonus.

After going through my earnings, I also didn't realize that previously, my subscription revenue was 60 cents (50 cents subscription plus the bonus).

It appears they are paying out based on credits and what those credits are worth and not dollars.

This was never explained in the announcements thread for anything other than the standard RF license.

Here are some sales with the dates:

02/27/2007 (maximum, RF, $1.00)
02/27/2007 (maximum, RF, $0.50)
03/02/2007 (large, RF, $0.50)
03/02/2007 (small, RF, $0.50)
03/03/2007 (large, RF, $0.25)

Does this make sense?  Can someone explain?
Title: Re: Anyone receive a subscription sale (@ 0.25) yet?
Post by: eendicott on March 03, 2007, 11:30
It doesn't make sense to me.  Yesterday I had a download with 2005 credits as well.  After two straight months of declining sales and a new pricing program that doesn't work for my portfolio, I've already decided it isn't worth it for me anymore.  This isn't the same Dreamstime I decided to go exclusive with last August - this is Dreamstime trying to be Shutterstock.

I've disabled all of my RAW files and opted out of all the extended licenses.    I'm afraid this is the beginning of my exit from Microstock altogether.

For all the time and effort I put into the Micros, I'm getting a much better return elsewhere.

Not as much volume, but definitely as much revenue so far.  I've been turning more to the traditional agencies.  Since I can't sell RF until my exclusivity is over (the end of March) I've been selling RM stuff.

I've also had a couple of private assignment type things here and there that pay much better.  I had a couple last fall and I have another coming up in May.  I'm currently working on a proposal to a brother of a friend that needs someone to shoot this summer some golf shots up at a couple of the ski resorts for an ad campaign.

I currently have over 750 RM oriented images pending at Alamy.  I'm going to prepare another submission of about 400 RF and RM this week - by the time Alamy gets to reviewing them, and I get to keywording them, it will be the end of March and my exclusivity will be over at DT.

My last upload to Dreamstime was last August. So i was lucky just  perfect timing i could delete the more precious files which i don't wanna dump in a subscription system in particular in full size  ;D.

They are only doing what they can to compete with Shutterstock and Istockphoto.
They should however, give submitters the chance to remove their images without having to wait 6 months. The more of you who leave, the more those of us who stay make.  ;D

i am surprised at all the nay-sayers about dreamstime.  I thought they were viewed as one of the 'good' sites.  They still give 50% on their sales which rather generous compared to the other sites.  Subscription sales is probably not too different and like stockmaniac said, they are no doubt just trying to keep competitive.  With their new pricing structure I will probably be receiving more / sale than any other site.

I received my first subscription sale yesterday, but it was for 0.50!

Here are the specifics:

Download type: Member download
Image level: Level 2
Price: subscription
Earnings: $0.50
Resolution: maximum
License: (RF)

What gives?

I'm not complaining at all, but I thought that subscription sales were supposed to be 0.25

Do higher levels receive higher subscription earnings?

DT is doing fine for me this month.  No 25c yet.  One exclusive image which was upgraded to level 2 got me US$3.  On average, I'm getting US$1 per dld.  Still, I think it's early to say how the subscription model will work.  I truly fear the subscription will be much cost effective for buyers and they will migrate to it.

In all fairness to DT, my revenue per image has increased by 20 cents so far this month.  I did disable all of my RAW files and my extended licenses though.

From here on out, it's only regular RF sales for me unless something changes that doesn't allow subscription purchases to buy RAW files or extended licenses at regular prices.

I think I finally figured it out.  It seems that there are also "old" subscription credits lying around.  If a buyer bought a subscription package under the old system, then you will receive 0.50 as a non-exclusive (or 0.60 as an exclusive) for a sale.  If a buyer buys a new subsription package, then you will receive 0.25 as a non-exclusive (or 0.30 as an exclusive) for a sale.

I got my first subscription sale from dt yesterday, Frankly I do so little there it seems like it isn't worth it to be there. The subscription model works well at SS because of volume, DT doesn't generate(at least for me) the kind of views nor downloads required to keep me interested in contributing. Of course I have a very small port there, so maybe i just need to relax a little and not worry, but I just feel that the sub. is a poor fit for that site.

The sub. with 25c just started, you should give it some time, and I am sure, there will be more sales :) The good thing about DT is, you do not have to upload constantly to keep your sales at a high level as you have to do with SS.

I am happy, because my thinking is, that people who bought that subscription will dld more images than usual. So I most probably didn't get that dl if it wasn't because of the subscription. Hopefully they increase :-)

why don't you try to STOP uploading on ss, and tell us than - if ss was top earner for that month? :) - you'll be (unpleasantly) surprised.
well, i don't know. for now, i stopped uploading on dt, and i'll wait until june-july - to make final conclusion, but for now, i think that dt does not representing my (and all of non-exclusive submitters) on the best possible way.

I am affraid that the well documented freshness advantage at SS is a direct result of the subscription model. So I think DT will increase the appeal of new images the more subscribers it can attract. But, by having the regular per picture price the effect will never be as strong as in SS. The only pictures that are not part of the SS freshness factor are editorial pics. It happened once and never again - sort of.

Well I had my first 25c subscription download, and then I just had an image sell at $1 then another at $2, both at maximum size?! It is a lottery as to what each Dl will pay, but, the DL's are still coming in. So I am happy  :)

ha ha.
that's really good - dt erased my post, and one of administrators sent me a message which says that i should carefully "check my numbers"  before posting...(and theme is closed).

that's like -  when i see stormy clouds approaching, and say "ok people, -there are some heavy clouds on the sky let's take some shelter, -hurricane is about to come" - and answer is - "come on - don't bother us - it's just a few of roofs destroyed a few towns away... let's wait if it's really going to hurt us.."

 - i rarely wait for hurricanes to kill me, and my family, and destroy our home... - now i'm almost sure - dt is going to change his owner in less than a year .

Got another today.

I'm curious though about one thing in the earnings statistics.  For this image, I have:

  Downloads: 2
Downloaded by: 2 members, 0 guests
  Version:
    old and 2006 credits : 0 small, 0 maximum, 0 additional
    2007 credits : 0 small, 0 medium, 0 large, 0 maximum, 0 additional
  Total: $ 0.50

So subscription sales are not listed in the Version/credits, is it so?

Madelaide:

I have had two subscription sales (@ 0.50 apiece) since the new 2007 prices started.  I checked both of the images and they both are counted in the "old and 2006 credits" section in the "maximum" column.

I would think that yours should be listed under the "2007 credits" section in the "maximum" column, since they are for 0.25 apiece.  Maybe there is a bug in their system.  You might want to report it.
